Okay yesterday some guy from NeoTel came out to my house. I ran a speedtest and the results are as follows:
Upload - 23kbps
Download - 482kbps
Ping - 565ms

Will I be able to play WOW? What is Upload exactly? If the Ping is 565ms with the speedtest, what will I be experiencing on a EU server like Spinebreaker (when I ran the speedtest, there was some distant weather, will that have an affect on the latency?)?

Can you guys PLEASE help me because I can get internet today and hopefully play WOW tonight, but I don't want to get NeoTel and it is too slow for WOW

Where was the speedtest aimed at?

If it was to a WoW server, then 565ms is acceptable by SA connection standards.

Most connections have a slow upload speed and a fast download speed. Download = incoming traffic. Upload = outgoing traffic (i.e. stuff your pc sends out)

Upload will almost always be less since you generally download more (via webpage browsing, receiving mail, downloading pr0n) , therefore ISP's reduce the speed at which you can upload to save on their band(width)wagon.

482kbps down is more than fine ... most guys play on a 384 line without issues. Just tell your gf to stop browing facebook on her laptop. Actually scratch that - be super nice to her, because after you start playing WoW you'll a) never have time for her & b) get dumped by her.

good luck mate! In the meantime - go to http://www.wowhead.com and check out the forums on the different classes etc.

you want to find out what class suits you best (tanking up close, being a ninja, being a spell caster, a shape shifter, a healer, or a hunter with a nice pet that does all the work)

You can also choose different races ... each race has a tendency to suit a certain class better.

You also need to choose your allegiance. Alliance (humans / elves / dwarves/ etc.) or Horde (orcs / trolls / bovine & the other scum) - I suggest you talk to Staalbal to make sure you're on the same side.

Trust me - it takes you hours do decide on this when you 1st get the game.

I don't think I aimed the speedtest at anything! I just clicked on the yellow piramid (the Johannesburg one) and thats all. Will the latency be more when I play on Spinebreaker?

If the 500ms were a local speed test, then expect anything from 800-1300ms to Spinebreaker... Is it worth it? most likely not...

Okay I think I have decided! - I am going to get a Vodacom 3G HSDPA:sick::sick::sick:
The contract will only be for 6 months, unlike NeoTel's 24 month period. So if it works, it works. If not, well then I won't be wasting that much money:confused:

I play using iburst. Normal latency runs at about 500-700ms. When using Gamemax.org, I get a constant 300ms. This even while I'm capped with a speed of ~64kps :D

When you don't take a contract from iburst you just need to buy the modem upfront, and you can go for a month-to-month option. If you select the 1gb package you only pay R199 & you get to still use the soft cap (heard of people using up to 80gb on the soft cap functionality)

But back to WoW....like I said, I play just fine with Ventrillo/Teamspeak running, in a 10man and whilst being capped to only 64kps.

neotel sucks balls wireless sucks balls, and sometimes i like to suck balls. ok .. nm.. go for i****. They are at least semi stable. i used to use them before but good luck with there iBilling as they are I****inguseless.

Are iburst available in your area? They seem to have a very small coverage area... And yes best is to try vodacom or mtn, for some people it works and for some it does not. I have tried in my area with an unlocked mobile modem and both vodacom and mtn only offered 56k speeds
When I used this closer to JHB I got a lot faster connection.
You can test this through their prepaid contracts before as well.

Will need to buy a modem (no idea what they cost now, got mine for R700). Then buy a sim card from both MTN and Vodacom, with R200 or so airtime from both (can buy fewer airtime as well). Insert the simcard in your modem and test the connection. The card may have to be activated for internet use through mtn or vodacom though. But ask Staalbal if you have any troubles he atleast can give you some advice on the MTN option.

A mobile phone modem ofc ;) Should be able to find these at cellphone shops etc. I have a Hawaii make, that is not locked to any network.
