I need some lense advice.

Hi all,

I'm off to Switzerland on Tuesday and thought it is a great oppertunity to spoil myself with a new lense for my Canon 20D. I'm looking at getting a reasonably priced wide angle lense. To try and get a good pic of them Alpes. I have the 24-85 lense that came with the body and I also have a 100-300 IS Zoom lense.

What would you get? :confused:

Side note: I'm stil saving up for the 70-200 2,5f IS. Might take quite a while for that one.
 
seeing you already have the 24-85
get the canon 10-22 for ultra wide

don't go for the 70-200 f2.8 IS
it's to damn heavy - it's no fun

For ultra wide, get the Sigma 10-20mm if the Canon 10-22 is too expensive. Aside from being a touch slower, there is hardly any difference. I have the Sigma. It's tack sharp and great fun to use. It has ring type HSM motor, so focus is quick and quiet and it has full time manual focus too. Great piece of glass, definitely the one I enjoy using most.
 
Ok! Thanks for the advice. Where is the best place to buy in Jhb? I'm budy trying to find pricing in Switzerland to, see if there is any point getting it there.

There are no inexpensive places to buy lenses in SA but if Switzerland is anything like the UK prices might not be that much better there than here.

How long will you be there for?

Just fyi - it's lens :o

LOL. 2 years of remedial school couldn't fix my spelling! :D

Wifee and I will be in Zurich for 8 days then of to the UK for 2 weeks then back to Switzerland for a week. Nice long holiday. :cool:

Canon SA's prices are dictated by Canon Europe, so I doubt very much that you will score too much in Europe. I did an on-line price comparison between Germany, UK and SA a while back and there was only a couple of R100 difference on the 100-400.
 
I don't really remember the prices, but I got some really friendly and helpful service from DigitalEye in Hyde Park. Particularly a woman named Jacqui, who is a photographer and actually knows a thing or two about the stuff they sell.

If you don't find anything in Switzerland, there are three places in London you should visit.

1. Camera World - They keep good stock, their prices are reasonable, and they have some display items for sale at a lower price. The guys are very helpful and knowledgeable and quite happy to let you try stuff. They're on Wells street just off Oxford street - map

2. Jacob's Digital - mostly because they have quite a selection of second-hand glass. But also, with friendly and reasonably knowledgeable assistants. They're on New Oxford street, just around the corner from the British Museum (worth a visit!) - map.

It's also just around the corner from Tottenhamcourt Road, which is well known for its camera shops. But don't expect to find the best price - it's really the place where you'll find good deals and a good selection on P&S and video cameras.

3. London Camera Exchange - Sometimes they have very good deals on new equipment, but they also have second-hand stuff and sometimes there are some real gems. Their staff are also photographers and know their stuff. They're on Strand, about 10min walk from Trafalgar Square - map.
