First time I've seen this.

Not exactly getting great speeds from it:

What exactly is the use of a Speedtest server? How does it contribute to improving your surfing experience?

I've done many Speedtests, currently my average is about 6Mb/s, meanwhile when I'm downloading torrents, it runs as high as 1MB/s

You might be misunderstanding me. I am downloading torrents at approximately 400Kb/s more than what Speedtest.net tells me I can download.

I've found that Speedtest servers can be a little unreliable. Often you have to find one that gives you the best results, but they can be a good indication of problems when routing to certain locations.

For me, I've found that a lot of servers don't upload as fast as I download. The nearest server that gives me reliable throughput is a server in Oslo.

Some servers really just suck and I believe that this tends to skew their statistics considerably. But they do serve a basic diagnostic purpose.
