I do contract work for a few small companies, not as a full time thing, its just what I do as some legacy of what I used to do.
Anyway, these last few weeks I just want to kill every single person. Ask them not to give my mobile number out, end up getting calls from users I dont even recognise saying "oh, I want to work from $random location this Sunday, but I cant connect to the vpn from there, can I ring you tonight to go over things, then Sunday you can help me connect" (unknown router at unknown remote private residence/location who probably nobody knows the password to doesnt passthourgh vpn yet., but sure, I'll explain that to you tonight, friday night, and I'm sure it'll whizz right through your facebook-befoked mind and then I'll come hold your hand on Sunday...because that exactly how I like to spend my time)

this whole concept of "i will wipe my ass with your private time" is doing my head in. People actually have the audacity to demand this.

I'm not high and mighty (well, not all the time) however a little "off" time is going to be highly appreciated. pls respect that. And its not the users I'm popping at...its the damn managers who authorised this, then gave them my number and said "dont worry, this guy doesnt sleep, he is a ****ing vampire and will actually click the buttons for you"

If they pay you for a service (and this type of thing is covered in the agreement for that service), so be it, if they don't pay, you are not a charity...

That's how it works I'm afraid.

The people who actually interface with the clients end up being the receptacle for all the BS and questions and rage that said client may have

Its simple, tell them no.
This would be my conversation with them:
"No you cant call me tonight, that is outside of my working hours. No you cant call me on Sunday either, that is also outside of my working hours. Is there anything else I can do for you?"

Depends on the structure of your agreement with the customer. You should have either a clear limit on the amount of time the customer gets or an hourly rate.

Once that's in place you can set a premium rate for A/H work. Between 2 and 3 times the standard rate is typically enough to make them think twice before picking up the phone. It also makes it worth your while to do the occasional jobs when there is a genuine crisis.
