's up all?

My PC is as follows...

* E6600 Intel
* SATA 500 Gb
* 4 x 1 Gb DDR II 800 Mhz
* Forgot what mobo I have...Gigabyte definately.
* 7600 GT
* Combo drive

I have some USB connections...gamepad, phone, USB stick, etc.

It is not now nor has it ever been overclocked.

When the PC is under load, best example being me playing NFS:MW (full spec') it will run for a while...say 20-30 minutes, and will then hang and instantly reboot.

It only ever happens under load.

Last night it happened again and as an experiment I pulled the one side cover off and started playing the game again, for around another hour or so. This time it did not reboot.

I'm assuming the thing overheats and then reboots itself to try and cool things down.

How can I cool my PC down...ON A BUDGET?

Firstly you need to check if it is heat. Get thermal testers, core temp(cpu) and riva tuner(vga). They both log, so you can play for a bit and the go out the game(before it crashes) and see wats looking hot. Otherwise you gonna spend on cooling and its something else...
 
here's another quiick and $$'less way to check if you overheating on cpu.... play till the machine reboots, then get into you bios/cmos (del button) and go look at the core temps in the cmos (assuming your mobo supports this) there is a tempreture setting there, sometimes two settings... one for slow down and one for reboot. under that will be the current tempreture.... use as an indication for further steps. hope you come right

Ryan - where can I download these apps?

I've installed Gigabytes EasyTune 5, and that shows me the temperatures...I'll make a point of writing them down tonight.

I have noticed that my PC will randomly 'slow down' for a few seconds whilst running NFS...but I haven't noticed any sort of timing pattern when relating it to the reboots.

Don't think easytune keeps a log file. try googling for those apps. you will not be able to alt + tab to check easytune as you say the pc restarts. :D
 
Your PC does not sound to old. What is your current case & fan configuration, a single 120mm rear exhaust fan should be more than enough to cool things down.

If I was you I would check the CPU cooler and pay attention to the thermal paste. There is such a thing as to much or to little thermal paste.
 
To me it's not old...to some, probably ancient. ;)

At the moment it's just the stock Intel fan over the CPU.

I've had the problem since I first got the PC, but it never really bothered me much as I hardly ever play games on it.

The one side panel has a 'duct' attached to the inside of it, but it doesn't line up with the fan.

It doesn't seem to reboot with the side panel taken off.

What's the procedure with regards to thermal paste? Take the fan off, wipe the existing gunk off, and squeeze some new paste onto it?

My company is registered with Rectron so I'll check the pricelist for thermal paste.
