PS. I associate Orange with the aggressive action used to root out all brands, business names and marketing which used Orange, the colour, etc. Maybe they aren't the same crowd. Just won't touch them with a barge pole ever since.

Agreed, but it really depends on the OP's needs.

OP- if the S-Pen and size are really important, I'd go for the Note Pro. The Lenovo's are significantly inferior even though they cost R4k. If not, the Z3 Tablet Compact is a beauty.

I'd stick up a wanted post on carbonite. For R5k, you could get something that would cost way more when new. Like an iPad air
 
For University purposes, I think the S pen feature alone will be worth its weight in gold.... It has no rival that I'm aware of...
 
Don't ever go for the lenovos over a Samsung, how can that even be suggested?

If you are going to be doing work like reading and using word you want a fairly good processor, but more importantly you want good screens. If you can look for a Samsung S range, they are pricey, but see if you can maybe get one secondhand. The Note range is also very nice, but again a bit more expensive.

Lenovo is ok, but that is just it. I had to settle for one because none of the damn cellphone suppliers had any S range Samsung and i was told they would get no more. And i regret settling for it every day. Screen quality is crap and looks like it belongs in something that is 5 years old.
 
I'd also look at the classifieds. Tablets are really losing popularity fast so you can probably pick up some for a good price.
 
thnx for the advice, will go look at a few classifieds!

The sony xperia 8" wont work for my needs, as its tad bit to small.
Will go and have a look at the note, the only difference between the pro and note was the s pen, if i remember correctly.
Might even take one out on contract. but need to work out the total's and work from there.
 
My Note 10.1 2014 edition is pretty awesome, the S-Pen helps too. It should be around R300 a month on contract with some data. Hopefully it gets Lollipop soon

Do you actually use the s pen or is more of a gimmick that's just there? I'm finding it hard to justify the extra 2k for the pen and mobile data.

And how useful is the S-pen in day day usage?

Have a look at the classifieds here and on carbonite. Should be able to pick up a decent tablet for cheap.

It depends on what you do day-to-day, I use the pen to take notes in meetings or to just doodle a sketch. Some games are easier to play with the pen as well.

If you're not going to be taking any sort of notes then you would probably never use the pen.
 
Helped a friend buying a tablet for her studies and ended up with an Acer 11.6'' Windows 8.1 tablet at CNA for R4999, everything included.

We started off with the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5'' tablet, but the price tag is just insane + the clip-on keyboard is another R1400, whereas the Acer comes with a detachable keyboard.

Also, she wanted something really light, when taking it with her when flying and the tablet is kinda heavy with the keyboard attached.

When we sat down for coffee halfway through looking at different tablets, we realised she will mostly use it for Office documents and web surfing - exactly what the Acer tablet does best, as you get a year free Microsoft Office 365 subscription with it.

So she bought the Acer tablet and is as happy as can be = mission accomplished.
 
Esquire has the Galaxy Tab S range on special. Check with them. Other than that the best would be the Galaxy Tab 4. It's got a crisp screen, bright colours and slim around the sides. Kalahari had the Ta4 for R2499.

Game is having a up to 25% sale on tablets and laptops this weekend. Good to also check there :)
 
I can get a Galaxy tab S or an Galaxy note 2014, which one should I take?

I'm currently leaning more towards the galaxy tab s, I think the note is going to get an update at the end of the year and as I don't think ill really be using the s pen.
