Basically:

What do I need to do AND how much will it cost.

I don't have a phone line.

Advice would be appreciated

Telkom is your best bet for a line

You need to get a voice line installed 1st of all, once this is done contact an ISP, Id recommend Afrihost and they will do the rest.

You will need to,
Install a telephone line with Telkom (you pay monthly R152 for this line).
Once you got your telephone number, you can apply for ADSL.

In order to get ADSL, you will need 2 things, i.e DSL (your adsl line speed), and data.
Some ISPs have bundled these together so you just pay them for both DSL and data. Other ISPs only offer data, and you need to get DSL from Telkom.

You normally get 3 options for DSL, i.e. 2M, 4M, 10M (different speeds at different prices).

I would recommend Incredible connections as an ISP. 2MB Account for R99

1. This is very important -> Ask your neighbour (next door, across the road, not in another street) who has ADSL internet for their number.
2. Place their number here and see whats the max speed you can get (depending on your budget)
3. Get a Telkom Weekender plan @ R176P/M
3.1 They will install the line (a few weeks)
4. Buy a router,a good one, (Netgear, TP Link, Linksys) Try not to get one under R800. Netgear DGN2200V4 is a good choice. If you dont want wireless you can spend less.
5. Choose an ISP with a bundled account (they include the ADSL line rental with the ISP package. I suggest a 1Meg Uncapped business account from Afrihost for R397 which includes line rental. If you arnt going to be doing a lot of downloads you can get the 4Meg uncapped account from afrihost for R387.

6. You fill in the form with AH and they will activate your line (2 weeks) and your account.
7. Once your line is activated and your ADSL is active fill in your details in your router. Done!

PS you will be paying 2 invoices one to Telkom (Voice/Phone) and another to AH (Line rental + account)

So if I took Afrihost as an ISP...

The costs would be:
R152 for voice line
R289 +- for DSL rental through Afrihost, 4mbps
R389 for Uncapped Afrihost subscription.

Total R830 pm?

Is that the best deal for uncapped?

Ok Great. I've got it.

So it will work out to about R600 pm Through afrihost

No, if you want the 4Meg uncapped its R389 INCLUDING line rental.

So R389 + 152

Do you speak from experience. The problem with very cheap ucapped accounts is they can be throttled to the point where they're unusable, and unlike being capped, you can't top up to rectify this.

Sorry im still getting used to this website:

If you're prepared to deal with the current issues at Telkom they would be the most cost effective at R705 all inclusive for a 4 meg uncapped package or R521 for the 2 meg uncapped.

Apply for one of those bundle deals which has free installation.

4MB Uncapped from telkom would be R500 all inclusive with the 25% discount (if you can get that)

Go to http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/search/exchange/ and type in you town or suburb name and see if you can find the exchange servicing your area which should tell you what speeds are available.

How much would the 2MB line be with the discount? And where could I find more details regarding this discount?

Also don't forget about the process for checking if there are any available ports. I've recently applied for a line, only to be told that there are no ports available and my application is on hold and will be reviewed in the next 30 days.
