I'm soo tired of shaped 'uncapped' services with pathetic performance. Have just changed my last 4096 uncapped account to 25+25GB unshaped capped.

Anyone else finding so-called uncapped services just too 'shaped'?

I never took an uncapped service...

Prefer capped unshaped as the internet is then always working unless on the odd occasion there is a telkom or ISP problem.

No, I never found that.... cos I never signed up with any of them in the first place.
I knew that was what it was going to be like when I read their FUP's.
I'll stick with my real uncapped thanks.
It's twice the price, but at least it works.

I kinda saw it coming. Once people started bragging about pulling 1TB+ in a month it was inevitable that something had to give.

Shaped caped works fine for me. Not willing to pay a premium for the unshaped part.

I'm on the WA special so thats cool, but for some reason there is a weird pricing anomaly in the market in the 30gb-100gb capped range. Capped prices there are ludicrous compared to uncapped, especially considering that capped is inherently insusceptible to abuse. e.g.:
100gig over uncapped = R199
100gig over capped = R950

^ WTF is up with that. Sure there are minor difference (384k vs ???) and the quality being different, but still that is a hectic diff in price per gig.

Why did it take you so long ?
I've also had a reg'lar top-end Telkom DSL account since they started (still crawling at 4096 owing to old DSLAM). Uncapped sounded quite good, especially for when kids and guests visit as you can't politely control their usage (five overseas guests left today, and they uploaded 300MB of photos to their website - took forever). Whenever kids/guests arrived I switched to the uncapped service by reloading the router firmware. Now I have to watch usage again, but at least performance will be ordinary pathetic 4096 unshaped rather than the totally unacceptable shaped uncapped.

100% Arthur - Also being on WA Unshaped is better, they use SAT3 oppose to SEACOM and I believe their unshaped is redundant encase of failure on a international route - where an uncapped user will be affected more.

On Mweb uncapped and have not had any major issues. When it becomes slow, you just switch to the other routing that they have. Download roughly 150GB a month and service always close to advertised price. Maybe i'm just lucky. ;-)

Nope, my "so-called uncapped" account is just great thanks, never seen any of this "shaping" nonsense so far. Always goes at full speed except when Seacrap goes down, then it's a bit slower (about 80% of full) for an hour or 2 until the backup kicks in. I don't try and download as much as I can though, only use about 80-150GB per month on a 1Mbit line.

Im also considering it as youtube and sites like megaupload are way to slow.
btw how much are you paying and do you get full speeds in the day on torrents and http?
Tnx

Openweb uncapped and Afrihost uncapped are both not worth the money.

Capped works better

Dude you complained about the shaping not the amount of data downloaded. I was just pointing out by the amount of data downloaded thru OpenWeb GOLD how lax on this account the shaping is. Next time try remembering your own posts. According to you that's why you changed from uncapped to capped.

I am happy with my capped service. When I need more data, I top up for the specific amount needed, such as when I buy a new game through Steam.

Just because you can download a large amount of data doesn't mean the shaping is lax. Shaping is protocol specific. By your reasoning they could block HTTP but if they allowed you to download 5tb/month via FTP or whatever, you'd be happy.

I also switched over from uncapped to capped a couple of months ago. I did not really see a problem with the speeds of the uncapped but we just got better latency and pings for gaming via web africa and hence we moved over. We generally game and web browse and so only use about 25 gigs a month with three people using the line, so very small users compared to some of you guys

I have clients doing around 600GB through my IS uncapped lines (even though they are shaped through their ass). So for those people they are really getting value for money.

Does that mean I am not getting my money's worth on MWEB's 4096 uncapped when I use 15-40Gigs per month?

I switched to the uncapped service by reloading the router firmware.
I hope that is a typo..
Hehe. ;) I can see that's ambiguous. But no typo.

Lemme explain: I have 3 different ADSL accounts, with different ISPs. I prefer not to use PPPoE as sometimes I take the server/gateway offline. So how to switch quickly between ADSL accounts? The quickest way for me is to save a router firmware profile (*.conf) for each account, so when I want to switch, instead of editing the account settings I simply click the appropriate firmware profile and reload. Viola. New account connected.
