Out of curiosity what you paying for the 5850?

Oh and promise me you wont use that turbo-v thing! Please dont. It's OC software that you can choose to install. It can get things terribly wrong..

I'm on a tight budget so I'll rather get another 2+ GB later, the board has four slots. From what I can gather online BFBC2 is fine with 2 GB RAM.

Buying from Frontosa, dealer cost plus VAT R2,950 for this model: Sapphire HD5850 Game edition , 40nm , HDMi ready , support Eyefinity + DirectX 11 , crossfire-X , built-in HDMi codec+7.1 audio , 1080p HDCP Compliant , pci-e 2.0 x16 , 1Gb 256bit 4 channel DDR5 , 32RoPs , 128Gb/sec memory transfer ; 1440 stream processors ( pixel shader engine + vertex pipelines ) , 72 texture unit , 2.09 TeraFLoPs , core/memory : 725/4000mhz , 2x dvi+Hdmi+DisplayPort, HDTV+HDMi tv-out - full retail pack with bundle game

I'm not particularly interested in overclocking so I'm likely to run everything at the factory default speeds. Am I correct in thinking that the i5 speeds up when it's under load (3.2 GHz) and slows down when not (2.66 GHz) for this model: Intel lga1156 i5-750 - Quad core , 2.66ghz box cpu / 3.2ghz turbo boost. Does this require software or is it automatic?

Yes, you are, but I don't know if you need software. I think it is done via the bios.

8gb RAM for gaming? Save your cash and only get 4gb. That 250 will be your weak link

edit: turbo boost happens on its own depending on various factors, no need for additional software or anything

Not quite. It speeds up and slows down depending on core load, not overall CPU load. Turboboost for a 750 is 1/1/4/4, and each number specifies the maximum clock increase as a multiple of 133Mhz for 4/3/2/1 active cores. So with 3/4 cores under load it will go to 2.8Ghz, wheras with only 1/2 cores under load it will go to 3.2Ghz. This is set via the bios, and no special software is needed.
 
If you want i7 then go for the 860, on par performance with the 920/930 but will run in a lower priced 1156 board and only requires dual channel ram. I would really recomment what I have in my sig, I have had the setup for +- 6 months now and can't fault it at all. Obviously you can change the GPU or board but you will still have the CPU strength from the 860.

Incidently my setup with a 5850 got 26300 in 3DMark06 and I got a CPUz validation at 4.6ghz on air.

Yeah I know that the 250 is the weak point but always been able to play games at max. But when i get some more cash I will upgrading to a 465 / 470. As it turns out I can get the i7 860 for R 600 more than the i5 so I am really looking into the 860 and 2 x 2gb Kingston HyperX ram for now. will put 4gb more in asap.

atm the board is R 1400, chip R 2500 and the mem R1300 and getting a cpu cooler as well.

I wanna see at least 10 passes of intelburntest on maximum before I believe 4.6... Just because you booted doesn't mean it is stable.

You dont really NEED more than the 4GB of RAM. But do look around as you can get cheaper ram with better timings..

Noooooo! :p GPU upgrade choices should be (in order of cost) GTX460, HD5850, HD5870, GTX480

Listen chop, I said CPUz validation. I don't run it 24/7. I was merely outlining the board/cpu performance. I want to see you validate even 920 D0 at over 4.5 on an R2E on air. Not too easy...
 
If it cant run 24/7 it's not a valid performance setup. (liquid nitrogen benching excluded) I've also had mine validated at 4.4 on air but it's pointless as it wouldn't even make it through a benchmark...

EDIT: Wanna find out why you bought a 860 and not a 750? I'm assuming for you to run 4GHz 24/7 and you have HT off to keep heat down? So @ 4GHz they essentially the perform the same? Or dont you run it 24/7?

4GHZ 24/7 with HT enabled and the 860 has 8 threads so in essence performs better. Also do video editing, photoshop, gaming etc and dabble a bit in distributed computing apps so the extra threads do help. Another reason is the 860 was top of the 1156 range and clocks very well so I bought it.

If you're a member of hwbot there are many different submissions of which one is CPUz validation so if you can boot and validate you get points.

At 4GHZ @ 1.25 vcore
Idle @ 35
Load @ 62
 
Ah I c.. Ya most people turn HT off to get 4GHz easier, that's why I was asking.
But nice low vCore. Mine can't go below 1.3 at 4GHz.
Signed a while ago, but haven't done anything on it.
