I5 with Optane or i7 without?

So I need a new notebook and I'm looking at 2 options. First is an Asus with i5 and 4gb+16gb Optane. The second is an HP with i7 and 8gb RAM.
Outside of that they're both specced the same. They both have mechanical drives.

Of the 2 which would give the best performance as I've not used anything with Optane. The results online look impressive though.

I'd rather go with a faster processor and more physical RAM. You can always buy an SSD drive for it.
 
I7, easy choice.
If in budget (SSD's are super cheap these days) i'd replace the mechanical drive with a ssd and get a drive caddy for the mechanical hdd.
cheapest i've found drive caddy's were at matrix wharehouse for R199

What will the laptop be used for?

For office use an i7 is kinda overkill.
 
In this case the I5 one will be faster just because of the 16gb Optane.

If you going for the i7 you will have to add a SSD or else it will still be dog slow.

Everything will open faster, not just powering on windows. You should look at videos on YouTube with the benchmarks

Or else just get the i7 with a SSD

My guess is that, if the i5 comes with the proper BIOS to support optane, the i7 will as well. so buy the i7, buy an optane module(super cheap) and install it yourself. otherwise an SSD with the i7 will be my choice as well.
 
They're both equally useless without an SSD. You'll notice both spend most of their time waiting on the HDD.
