Hi there.

I'm looking for a i7-3770k brand new or second hand if can. As you can see i have the system to run it but I see it's a bit expensive. I need the i7 for some other stuff i'm going to do so don't come and say no you don't need a i7. you will waste your money etc etc cause the thing i'm doing will actually use all the cores/threads.

So where is the cheapest if i can still get it. I don't want to go i7-4770k cause then i have to buy another motherboard and cpu is more expensive and performance is not that much better than i7-3770k.

I will be overclocking but do you guys think i should rather go xeon as that is less expensive and i can save but will the i7 give me much more performance when overclock justifying the price.

Also one more thing i want it to game too @ 2560x1440@120hz and i think the extra cores will also help as more games starting to make use of it and i get extra benefits from pci-e 3.0.

I'm in the Pretoria area if that helps

Please read this as this is very important

When I play BF4 I get 100% cpu usage in some areas and then my FPS drops to like 80 and GPU usage is not 99% it's something like 70. It's not like a small spike then back up it's like drops for a second or 2 or for the duration I'm in the area. this is what I tried

1. unpark cores
2. All drivers since 13.12
3. Reinstall windows 8.1 and just installing drivers and BF4
4. overclocking cpu to 4.7GHz making sure it's stable in prim95 for 12Hrs.
5. running stock bios defaults
6. Trying mantle get good fps but after like 10min of play i get 10FPS
7. Timer resolution
8. Turning on Triple buffering and BF4 user.cfg file to optimize game a bit.
9. played with renderahead values in BF4
10. making sure all my cores is running on 4.7GHz when playing BF4

still my cpu will go up to 100%

Thanks

Nelis

Here

Edit: The I7 3770K isnt much better then your current CPU, sure it has double the amount of threads and 2MB more cache but it it really worth it? And the 2500K is a much better overclocker.

Stick with your current setup, and add a mega GPU a solid PSU and up your RAM to 16gbs.

EDIT: Your current setup should be fine to game at that res.

uhm why do i need a bigger graphics card. I'm already running beast gpu's and for psu that ax850w is top of the line and my ram is actually 16GB. What if i tell you my cpu usage in games like BF4 is 100%. i tried the following

1. cpu stock clocks
2. 4.7ghz clock
3. 4.5ghz clock
4. windows 8.1
5. disable core parking and running performance mode in windows 8.1
6. fresh install with only bf4 installed and latest drivers
7. trying mantle but that makes me stutter and drop to fps as low as 10FPS
8. making sure my cards are seated right.
9. checking temps and top card never goes above 83C

btw I'm at 2560x1440 @ 120hz and I'm getting this issue on other games to. Everyone keeps on telling me not to upgrade cpu cause everything is fine but how can it be. As you can see i tried everything. nothing more i can think of but to upgrade cpu and overclock it. seeing as bf4 can make use of more cores it should help a bit.

Please give me more stuff i can try.

Actually Frostbite is optimized for 8 cores rather than 4 cores. The i7 is 2 threads per core and not native 8 core.

Have you tried running BF4 through D3DOverrider?

So you want to upgrade your CPU so mantle can work properly?

no so that every game can work properly. I can't sit around and wait for amd to fix stuff. I've been waiting ever since I got these cards in October

If you think upgrading from a I5 2500k to a I7 3770K will make a huge difference in FPS, you are dead wrong.

So i bought a sexoncd hand i7-3770k will see when it arrives and i can tell you guys. I will get improved performance and most probably no or almost no bottleneck. Nobody runs my setup and don't understand my bottleneck.

Just saying it won't improve fps is absurd cause clearly i have a bottleneck and more games starting to make use of more than 4 cores so this will help. But like i said i will see when I installed it and maybe overclocked it. 2560x1440 @ 120hz is really taxing on the CPU. Mot games will max out my CPU .

If you think upgrading from a I5 2500k to a I7 3770K will make a huge difference in FPS, you are dead wrong.

You only have a 460 so no wonder you don't understand my situation. lol.

You do know the I5 2500k and the I7 3770K both have 4 cores?

Please watch and understand this

I have a Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 OC @1GHz core and 1.5/6.0GHz memory and a 4771 @ 3.5 stock, will check processor usage on BF4 later today and post the results.

First, just so we're on the same page, the i7-3770k has 4 cores and 8 threads because it has Hyperthreading, the i5-2500k you have has 4 cores and 4 threads, it has no Hyperthreading. Hyperthreading gives around 30% more speed than a CPU without it.

Now Hyperthreading fools the system into thinking the CPU has 8 cores when it only has 4. The general consensus is that Hyperthreading does not improve performance in games, only programs such as Autocad and programs that require loads of threads.

From the benchmarks I have seen Hyperthreading in Battlefield 4 actually decreases performance than not having it on in the first place, this could be due to the game being poorly optimized (not surprisingly).

Personally I think you have wasted your money on getting the i7-3770k for gaming, if you are going to use programs like Autocad ect then it was a good investment. I would of gone for a 8 core AMD CPU instead. If you gain performance then good for you, please post the results as I would be interested in seeing how it compares to your i5-2500K.

Intel 8 core consumer CPU's will be hitting the market in the 2nd half of this year, with a new chipset and will use DDR4 memory.

This video will explain how to use D3DOverrider https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhhXqgOsFbM

Basically it gives you a stable frame rate by enforcing triple buffering.
