Yes definitely shoot for an SSD. I'd rather have an SSD and a dual core than a regular hard drive and a quad-core.

i7 930 vs 1090T, which to pick?

yep from what I read the 1090T Black edition can't even properly beat the I5 -750 never mind the I7- 930
I would personally go for the Intel
oh and just so you know my previous 4 machines had AMD CPU’s
I just can’t dispute the performance of the Intel’s at the moment

Wrong. The 1090T beats the 930 by 15% while rendering, and the 750 by 70% (even the 1055T beats out the 750 by 40%). Depends greatly on the program/task being performed
Anyway, from what I could gather the 930 beats the 1090 in CS5 (approx 15-20%). But the 1090 wins if rendering (15-20%). Since the rig will be used a lot more in CS5 I've decided to go the Intel route. Total build with some revised parts on both sides has the i7 930 combo (CPU, mobo, RAM) at $564, the 1090T at $535 and the 1055T at $435. Value for money I think the Intel is going to suit my needs better. Pity that I lose out on SATA3/USB3 but its not exactly a deal breaker. Still deciding if the SSD can fit in the budget though

Yes, which then puts it back at the same price as the 1090. And will I be using the USB3? Will decide during the course of next week. Its not a big amount (current mobo is $180) so might get it.
I can't find the GA-790XTA-UD4 mobo on gigabyte's site, but the GA-MA790X-UD4 supports the 6core cpu, so it would be cheaper for you just to get the 1090.

Ok... In the costs noted earlier I'm using a $130 board. The one you listed is about $140. And the 1090T build has always been cheaper or equal. I dont get what point you are trying to make.
no your wrong in image rendering the i5 750 has 70% of the performance

it's only 30% slower
remember the red indicators is for overclocked version the I5 is not overclocked here and it can generally overclock to above the i7 980 standard speed
and my statement was for overall performance in which from what I can see the 1090 barely beats the i5 750.

Well i am not sure if you will be using usb 3, i know i barely ever use it. Although it would be nice when i copy 16gb music onto my usb stick for my car that is does not take 2 days to complete .

Wrong yet again, and you missed the point - the 1090T can and does beat the i5 750 depending on the workload.
PS - 5.72/3.76 = 1.52 = 1090T is 52% faster OR 3.76/5.72 = 0.65 = i5 750 is 35% slower

The point I am trying to make, is that you already have a mobo and mem for the 1090. If you go I7, then you have to buy not just only the cpu, but the mobo and ram as well, and since you aren't really looking for a gaming pc, it only makes sense to go for the 1090.
Or did I miss read somewhere and you are going to buy a new mobo and ram as well, if you go for the 1090?

I have my own PC. This build is for a whole new PC, house needs a second one since my wife is using mine too much and so I cant get any SCII gametime in 
But thought I could get the 1090T for the new machine, give it my current mobo, and buy myself a new mobo with 2 x16 PCIe slots.

Sweet. Cost whise, I think they will cost about the same, they being:
1. AMD 1090
890x mobo
4x2Gb ram
2. I7 930
X58 mobo
3x2Gb ram
Personally, I would go for the I7 setup, cause you can always add more ram, where the amd will be maxed, except if you go 4x4Gb, which I don't think will be supported by the mobo, might be wrong though.
2ndly, The last AMD I had, was the Phenom II 945 on a 790gx mobo with 4gig ram and my pc felt sluggish compared to my E8400, 780sli mobo and 4gb ram, from which I upgraded, or so I thought. Sold it all and went back to intel.
My vote therefor goes for the I7, but imho, it's your choice.

Already decided to go with the i7. Photoshop loves Intel chips and thats what the PC will do the most. In rendering the AMD is a winner but thats not what it will be doing the most so to base the decision on its rendering performance is dumb. Still love my 955 though

I was saying it does not properly beat the i5 as in it does not beat it in all of the tests (in the article not just this page)
I agreed that in that rendering the i5 only gave 70% of the 1090T's performance
but there is a few of the test where the i5 makes it back
the 1090 is quite a bit more expensive compared to the i5 and I was not suggesting he gets the i5 but the i7 which has the better memory bandwith
oh and PS score is 2.02 for the 1090T and 2.06 for the i5
thats 98% of the performance
Your talking about cinebench which is benchmarking software
and yes there is a large difference there
but going through the whole article the i5 does not lose by a huge margin.
And I would take the i7 above the 1090T for overall performance

MSI mobo for $170, or with USB3 for $200. Might get an evga board at that price though, they are teh sexeh
