Iburst and WIFI router

Ekhaatvensters guessed right :) Using Ubuntu LTS on a 600MHz PII Celeron notebook. The battery's shot and the LCD ain't that good anymore either. Even with everything going its load-average rarely exceeds 0.2 Uptimes are usually a good many months. If it wasn't doing this, it would have been junked long ago.

NeuralBlade, I didn't know APs ran OSs on which you could load custom apps. The cooling fans on my router machine is busy packing up - it's been on 24/7/365 for about three years now - time to start looking for alternatives.

I recall something about AP-hosted networks being more power efficient than Ad-hoc networks too.
 
If I wanted to, I could do a hardware hack on my WRT54GL and add 2GB of storage space to my AP. It can also mount samba shares from other machines and use it :)
 
:( i feel like im under-utilizing my WRT54GL now. I at least flashed it with DDWRT but frankly dont know what most of the features do.

iburst is a modem and not a router thefore you need an access point so other computers can connect. I ended up useing a gigabyte 108mbs wireless access point with four ethernet jacks. All you have to do is in the wan settings change it to PPPOe and not PPPOe LLC. Then enter the username and password fot the iburst and changed the MTU to 1352. Remember the network cable from the iburst modem must be plugged into the access points wan.

Maybe the original post was a bit too cryptic. The point of the post & link is you do not need a UTD (Desktop Modem) you can use the PCCard/CardBus iBurst Modem or the iBurst USB Modem. Using OpenWRT in these devices effectively gives you a single box solution; one power supply etc.
 
i have a linksys router too.... what model i am unsure. it is blue and black with blinking lights and has to funny sticks on it which i assume are antenna's

the only reason why i use wpe or woteva is cuz the other wep security protocol was giving me crap on my one laptop (due to the highly crappy intel wifi built in card).

can my router make coffee for me on demand? :D

nah its a great router for a desktop UTD.
 
Connecing Ibusrt Deskop modem with Linksys WRT54G3G

I am desperately trying to get my Linksys WRT54G3G router to work with my Iburst desktop modem, and have had no luck what so ever. :confused: Has anyone got this successfully working, all help would be appreciated.
 
Okay so i got meself one of these routers.

Trying to set it up using my MAC through the web-based setup, as the router didn't come with a MAC Setup Wizard CD.

Using the 192.168.1.1 IP address I manage to get into the web-based setup easily. I enter my details (usernames, passwords, MTU:1352, etc...) and save my settings.

For some very strange reason it won't let me connect! Has anyone else come right with this router and a MAC? If so, please help....

I've had no problem getting a WRT54G3G to connect to iBurst via the WAN port. Failover to HSDPA when WAN dropped also works pretty good.

Just configured PPPoE, [-]no fancy messing with MAC addr etc.[/-] This was with the firmware just prior to the most recent release (cant remember ver, but the one before 2.10.17). Havent tried on the latest though.

Hi limnos,

If you can access the web interface and configure things, then you shouldn't have any issues setting it up.

I cant remember anything of the standard firmware on the WRT54GL, I am currently running DD-WRT v24 RC6. So if you flash the router with the DD-WRT firmware then I can easily help you out. If not, Im sure I can figure things out.

I dont know how you set things up, so Im just going to run through things quickly.

A) Very NB!!! make sure the iburst modem is connected to the router to its Internet port. There is five ethernet connectors at the back. 4 together (thses are the LAN ports) and one on its own to the left, this is the internet (WAN) port. I use the blue cable that came with the modem for this, just so I can quickly check everything is ok.

B) If the router can "dial in" to iBurst then you are almost set. If you cant get the router to connect, then there is something wrong with the username/passwords. Make sure you select PPPoE under connection type, enter your username/password, and try and connect.

C) Your mac must use the router as its default gateway, as long as the router connects to iBurst. To make things easier at first, enable DHCP on the router aswell as your MAC. On the mac its under "Network" on the TCP/IP tab next to the configure option select "Using DHCP". This will ensure the router gives all the neccessary information to the MAC so that it can use the iBurst connection.


That should be the basics. If you cant come right, PM me and Ill see what I can do.
 
Ok I am getting an error that my PPPoE can not give me an IP Address. I have enabled all DHCP settings, on the MAC and the router... All the cables are connected correctly and user/pass are are typed correct.

I downloaded DD-WRT v24 RC6.bin, but don't have a clue on how to run it in MAC? Please help...

iBurst techies don't have a clue about routers...
 
Let me try to see if my memory of the settings is still there. If the router leds are facing you, then you have the cord from the iBurst modem connected to the rightmost port? Then from your Ethernet to the router is in one of the following ports. And just to confirm you have the WRT54GL and standard firmware?

EDIT: I may be now getting confused between stock and DD-WRT firmware, but did you specify where you enter your login details it should authenticate via PPPOE?
 
Yes PPPoE is selected. I'll just call Linksys tomorrow morning and see what they can do for me...

Milomak: Yip it is the WRT54GL router and the standard firmware is on. Not sure how to flash the router using a MAC....
 
A couple of days ago my UTD got struck by lightning (using external antenna that is mounted on my roof). This caused the lan ports to be a problem trying to set up the router.

This is just great now, anyone know where I can find 2nd hand UTD for cheap cheap price?
