Is it true that iBurst is closing down? Where's the party?

I heard a rumour today that they are dismantling sites. Apparently, some iBurst services in other countries are closing down.

Why should I celebrate? Should I get ADSL and pay R300 more for what I have now without softcap? Er... no, thanks.

Is there maybe a source to this? or just "I heard from a friend?"

"with 3G mobile broadband having caught up with iBurst speeds and started offering improved coverage over the past few years."

The writing is on the wall. With 3G offerings from Hellcom and WiMAX players like Screamer already offering improved speeds and lower costs thy have to be running for the hills.

Does iBurst the product still have a market in South Africa?

iBurst the company is selling Vodacom product and ADSL, so they are here to stay until someone take them on.

Just a thought - what does the competition commission thinks of iBurstSA selling Vodacom products?
1. How can you sell your competitor's product,
2. what are the chances of price fixing here?

iBurst is run by the son of the Vodacom CEO or ex-CEO (recent ex-CEO).
But you're right about price fixing, however, iBurst is cheaper than 3G, substantially cheaper and quite mobile.

You are so right. 3G is so much cheaper and more usuable. I mean
you can surf on your 320by240 display cellphone while sitting on the toilet
or in the jacuzzi. iBurps requires an actual computer - which sucks... and is so 1990s. I know I'd rather be paying for 3G than for iBurps.

MY GIG Ten 10 GB R 2,049.00

iBurst 10GB Addict R999.00

Obviously 3G is much cheaper, not to mention that 3G is hardcapped at
the cap size, while iBurst drops to 64kbps after cap (sometimes it doesn't
actually even drop off and stays at full speed).

This brings me down to my original question - does iBurst the product still have a market in SA?

Most people will have a cellphone and not a computer

So you're saying that the PC based internet market should just be abandoned?
Especially that PCs and laptops are becoming cheaper and cheaper...?

IMHO it is still gonna be a while (long while) before the conventional 'pc internet' will loose all of its market share in South Africa to 'cell-/smartphone' driven internet. And as for iBurst SA shutting down, this will not happen due to people not wanting to use them anymore (we've seen in the other thread that even 'tech smart' people with other options STILL go for iBurst), but rather the management team screwing up /points at Financial Manager in charge of acounts

I also think that Oz is a little further in their evolution of internet options than RSA, iBurst is probably reached its expiry date there, but not yet in RSA.

Well in Japan, the home of really cheap HSDPA and really cheap uncapped 100Mbit/s fiber, there is a market for both. In fact people use cellphones to email each other while on the road and outside while PCs while they're at home or to do stuff they can't on their cellphones. Most Japanese mobile users use advanced mobiles which are NOT smartphones yet resolve websites better than our pathetic excuses for smartphones (eg HTC). So I'm not sure what future you speak of.

I don't see PCs dying out at all, not even desktop systems.

iBurst is cheaper than HSDPA, is not hardcapped and in my case is FASTER than 1.8Mb HSDPA - even iBurst 1Mbit connection is faster than 1.8Mb from Vodascom. iBurst also allows softcap of 64k which is more than adequate for casual browsing, email, Skype VOIP and instant messaging. For most people, who use these former things (and don't mind waiting overnight for 300MB of downloads) iBurst AFTER softcap is good enough. In fact you can do 20GB on softcap per month. (some ppl do more when the softcap
fails - eg 60GB per month).

Did you see that HSDPA costs DOUBLE what iBurst costs? And is hardcapped?
Why would anyone want to pay DOUBLE? Therefore iBurst is not dead and for what you get
it's the cheapest broadband offering on the SA market.

I must agree, I'm on 10gb with softcap. With a proxy server to bypass theirs, I get full speed browsing. I do have external antenna at home and at work we across the rd from a tower hehe

Few months back there was bad patch but it's been quite stable lately, in or anyway

I did post about a week back About proxy errors then went back to my own proxy

+1

With all the iBurst probs (which i haven't got) I still think is the best value for money.

Mebbe iBurst should pay us for some good marketing:D

a few pple asked me what proxy i use, i use my own server in .ca

you can use a site like proxybonanza.com or one of the proxy lists (not guarenteed to be fast)

I may be able to rent out some proxy access but i think it will just be an admin nightmare lol

If and only If you can actually get a signal so it's a moot point.

I will conceede and qualify my previous point with 'IF YOU CAN GET A SIGNAL'. Of course NEOTEL is even better than iBurst but, of course, IF YOU CAN GET A SIGNAL too. :D

Your Mileage May Vary. (YMMV) :)
