Hi people

I am new to iBurst, have had it for about two months one of which months my computer had a virus so I was not able to use it; anyway long story short our IT guy fixed my comp.

Last night I got connected, was online, when all of a sudden connection dropped. When I tried to reconnect I got a message that said: "unable to find phone book file".

I have seen this message beforehand too; when I realised that I must've got a virus. What I want to know is whether this problem is caused by the virus ir whether it is a common or well known iBurst problem.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hmm, I have never seen such a message, and I've been on iBurst now for almost 3 years ... I doubt it is iBurst related. Do you have anti-virus software installed?

@ Sweetlicks - what system do you use?

As Landyman said as well. Never had such a problem with iBurst so far.

If you need an antivirus system, take a look at the excellent AVG antivirus package - and best of all, it is free. :)

An antivirus package on its own is not good enough, you will also need a firewall, such as Sygate or Zonealarm.

The IT guy installed AVG and anti Spyware software; so I have them. Not sure what system I have... It's an Acer machine, bought brand new in 2005.

That's a start, but not enough. As The_Librarian said, you need to look at a firewall. For a non-IT user like yourself, ZoneAlarm's Free firewall would probably be the best bet.

Thanks I will go and download that as soon as I can get onine. At present bit difficult; what with this issue.

where would one get this ZoneAlarm?

From the sounds of things your iburst dial up connection was deleted, either by a virus or by windows playing silly buggers.

I could give you step by step instructions on how to check and recreate the connection but I think you might have a MUCH easier time just uninstalling and reinstalling the iburst software. (Even though me and most other forumites think the software is garbage, it at least makes things easier for users without much pc experience)

I did uninstall and reinstall Basjohn, thanks for that suggestion; same thing happened. No problems were encountered by me, however, before the virus problems came; I had no trouble connecting and staying connected.

I'm desperate for suggestions as I am so worried my computer may be kaput..

:(

Have you tried switching between connecting via Ethernet and connecting via USB? It's not much of a solution as it's only avoiding the problem not fixing it.....but it may be worth a shot.

iBurst connects to your computer either through the USB port (rectangular port that tons of gadgets nowadays use, you'll probably have lots of these on your machine) OR through your Ethernet/Network port. The ethernet port looks like a LARGE (larger than normal) telephone jack, not all pc's have one of these but if your pc is less than say...6 years old then it's almost garunteed to have one.

Basically just switch to whichever you're not using (if you're on USB go Ethernet or if on Ethernet go USB) and install the iburst software while making sure to select the option for it.....umm that is assuming the iBurst software lets you choose...I've never touched the software myself (I manually set up the connection) so I'm not sure if it does or not but logically...or knowing iBurst....hopefully....it *should*.

Also you'll need an ethernet cable to connect the iburst modem to the pc, they might have included one of these with your modem but if not they can be bought cheaply. Make sure to buy the "straight" version and not the "cross-over".

Hopefully all that nonsense helped you....though I probably just confused you even more.

OK thanks I'll gve that a shot, I do understand what you are driving at and yes, it does let you choose as you instal; I think the options were computer modem; USB modem and one other...

will give it a bash, ta

Conficker virus

Last night I got connected, was online, when all of a sudden connection dropped. When I tried to reconnect I got a message that said: "unable to find phone book file".

Google gave me a link to this old thread last night when I searched for help on the missing phone book error iburst was giving me. Restarting the pc would rectify it temporarily.

This thread bolstered my suspicion that I had a virus and that was confirmed when I was denied access to anti-virus sites and microsoft update.

The first step in removing a virus is identifying it. Once you have a name for it, you can google it and discover how to remove it. I got Windows Defender to scan my system and it not only found the virus, it also removed it.

I had a variant of the Conficker virus on my system:

Hope this helps the next person who googles this symptom.
