Greetings from Nairobi, Kenya. Awesome forum you lot have going here! :) Our ISP here is Africa Online (owned by Telkom SA) and we use iBurst. A lot slower than in SA, but no caps :) well almost hehe.

To the point:

My rather awesome aunt bought me a netbook and a D-Link DWL-2100AP wireless access point for my birthday. I use iBurst on my home desktop, and the idea was to hook the D-Link up so that it provides wi-fi access for the mobile netbook.

Now the problem is the D-Link only has one network plug on the back - which I connect to my desktop PC. Then the iBurst modem goes to the desktop by USB. Can I 'bridge' or use internet connection sharing to let my netbook have access to the net?

I realise that the D-Link was the wrong thing to buy. A wireless router is what I needed (one network cable to the PC and one network cable to the modem). But the gifts were bought in Dubai so no exchange :(

Is there any way to get the internet via USB to the D-Link to the netbook? I don't mind that the desktop PC has to be on if the netbook wants access. The desktop is on 24/7 anyway :p

Any help MUCHO appreciated.

Well, if you have your iBurst modem attached to your desktop via USB then you can enable internet connection sharing on the PPPoE connection you use to dial up iBurst, just be sure to set it to share to your desktop PC's ethernet port... then connect the AP to the ethernet port on your PC.

you will however need to manually assign your netbook an IP addy on the same subnet as your desktop pc (which will also need a manually assigned IP) as the AP does not have built-in DHCP.

Hope this helps.

On the money so far...

bzzzzt! Hang on there sonny, ICS sets a static IP on the host PC (192.168.0.1) and itself becomes the DHCP server for all clients wanting to connect to it so yon netbook would have to be set for automagically obtain IP and DNS. Also, it would be A Good Idea(tm) to assign the Dlink AP an IP on the 192.168.0.x range; somewhere out of the way like .254.

And then there's the whole SSID/generally_wireless stuff to handle too, but that's a different thread.

Success! Got it working!

But another problem has cropped up... I'm setting file sharing and I can see my laptop's shared drives from my PC (network places --> view workgroup computers). But on the laptop when I click on the PC's icon it gives an error about "server service not started".

Thanks for the help though. The iBurst side is sorted! Would like to play episodes of the simpsons from my desktop PC while sitting on the loo :D:D

OH! Groovy! :D guess ICS is betta then I thought :P lol

OK chaps got it all working perfectly. I can now get mobile internet on the netbook from anywhere in the house :) And I can access files from the desktop anytime (since the netbook only has 4 GB hard drive hehe). Thanks for the help!!!

Out of interest - I pay 4000/= shillings a month here for iBurst. Thats about R500 a month. I get unlimited 128 kb down 32 kb up connection from 7 pm to 7 am plus all weekend. No cap. The 24 hour version is 256/32 for about R800 a month.

And on the weekend nights they unleash it and I can download at 50 KBps easily.

I could go through 10 GB easily in a heavy month, but recently if you download more than 200/300 mb in a day you get a SERIOUS slowdown.

Weekends is still awesome though. Can get a few movies a night easily :)
