hmmm, shaping the traffic, in order to be fair.........
suppose it depends on your definition?
I wud kinda like to use the internet the way I want to, and if I pay for a (up to  ) 1mbps service, thats what I want, however way I use it, the service provider should ensure that some of their fat profit goes towards providing that kinda service, and not create the impression of a better service, that u most likely wont see.
I guess thats where the magic words (up to) comes in :)
To me this explanation from IBURST reads : if your connection is slow, then u'r using it the wrong, unintended way, or going where u shouldn't... :D
Pity most folks arent aware of that when they hand over their munny

I agree ...if you're selling a 1mbps service, that is what you should provide and if you're going to sell that same 1mbps service to 100 000 people so that your contention ratio is through the roof then then that's your problem. Besides that the "minority" doing all the downloading are surely paying for the data that they are downloading..so Iburst are getting their money anyway (although speed and data would be two different arguements).

But lets face it....who does Iburst buy their bandwidth from and who do they have to connect to at some point...the crowd we all love to hate...Telkom.

I'm sure what they will end up doing though is selling different packages..shaped and unshaped and then make you pay for it just like everyone else.....again thanks to Telkom..

Telkom is the root of all broadband evil.

Shaping is only fair if you don't have a cap. They want to control how we use the gigs we have paid for. complete BS. Like petrol stations telling you what roads you are allowed to drive on with the perol you have purchased from them.

Lets just PRETEND they were right and it was making things fair, my question would be why do they shape MSN Messenger and gtalk etc. I mean i doubt people are really sending gigs over msn are they and even if they were they are probably sending small groups of files cause i often wanna send like a pic or something like 1mb over msn and it is freakin slow & thats when im uncapped, when im capped MSN struggles to stay connected, now how is shaping fair here? MSN couldn't have been using that much bandwidth of theirs could it?

My guess is they haven't assigned MSN a specific priority so it automatically gets tossed into the lowest priority basket. When bandwidth is constrained the lowest priority protocols suffer first.

ah get off it. Poor excuses for a badly run service. The problem is they cant control their bandwidth monitors and capping programs so they just slap on general restrictions to try limit the damage.

So glad I will be rid off this poor excuse for an Internet Sevice provider...

Still can't understand hopw the rest of SA's ISP's, Telkom included, can reduse the costs of Internet access yet iBurst's price has remained the same from day one... and service from both staff and network has gotten worse.

I think you hit the nail on the head with your reply, they lost control of their capping control many moons ago as I've proved month after month for almost 2 years.:D

I also found that , yesterday my modem got reset twice but it was uncapped both times (as in for at least a few hours i was at full speed all the time) even though i had downloaded several gigs over my cap already during the month :D

The challenge nowadays isn't our tiny ass caps....it's actually finding http downloads to use it with. Oh sure there's rapidshare, but isn't it ridiculous having to pay MORE money in order to use your current internet connection like you would have been able to with any other isp in the first place?

Oh Torrents....I miss you so!

I'd rather pay the extra few bucks to RS and be able to download many files at full speed ALL the time instead of the frustration of using crawling torrents.

AA/BEE.

Torrents DON'T crawl on a proper service and if you've configured them correctly.

The technology behind them is ingenius and back when I was on sentech I was torrenting at full speed almost 100% of the time. People in this country tend to have distaste for them because of the upload factor, but if you merely limit uploads to say...3kBs you can still download at great speeds on some clients.

Not with iBurst tho :/

@ Basjohn
Agreed, finding http downloads that are worthwhile is basically impossible, I get to the point where I have nothing to download so I just download game trailers or stupid things like that

@S1ght, wrong, anything "worthwhile" that you can find through torrents you can find through http if you know where to look.

Ja, very wrong :)

There's nothing wrong with free rapidshare anyway (at least with our dynamic IP's), just resuming that can get you, but there are a lot of similar services and you can resume on a few of them.

If anyone has a way of doing any kind of p2p on Iburst, please PM me with some hints
what about something encrypted or SSH tunnels... anything....

...or is it just NOT possible?

I just get everything I want on http, I've never wanted to use P2P really... do you know all the common http places?

wouldn't mind a few of those links either... Plz!

Gonna rip my connection till the last of the 30 days notice period!
