Have any of you guys ever compared our iBurst prices to those in a place like Australia?

Yeah, I saw that, but at least they have 10Gb options. Very useful for someone like me with all our servers in the UK

Something tells me that company has not noticed that Australia switched from GST to VAT a coupla years back...

You really have to ask yourself why WBS in South Africa are charging a whopping R 2800 for the Desktop Modem, when Australia are charging Oz$249.00 * 4.582509 = R 1141

So WBS in South Africa charge almost 2.5 times more for the same modem ?

You can ask them, if you feel like listening to a BS story ... they will give you the standard response of shipping, import duties, blah, blah blah

I actually have a friend in Oz using iBurst at the moment. I quote:
"my so-called 'high tech, cutting edge' internet/VOIP connection's just been so unreliable. i havent been able to figure out what the problem is, but the possibilites include (but are not limited to) the not so reliable nature of wireless transmission, slow servers on the ISP's side... or a slight problem with my own router."

Well, you could understand maybe a R500 markup, but R1700 ? - that's downright criminal.

Interesting ...

simple, smaller broadband market and pricier bandwith means they have to have bigger margins to turn a profit, if you click around I believe you'll find that thier adsl prices are cheaper too.

Get over the cost of R2800 - nah, not likely.

Hopefully when iBurst matures and is working great for 95% of people, the modem costs will go down - damn well hope so anyway !
It's going to be interesting to see what happens this year in terms of iBurst and the launch.
All we can hope for is that it's successful enough to drive prices down quickly, so I can get away from Hellkom again.

If you are gonna compare Iburst UTD / UTC prices, go and find out how much they cost when the OZ Iburst launched. Don't compare our infant network to one thats been running for a couple years.

You think the Base Stations Fell out the Sky and Set themselves up? The money has to come from some where.

i'd rather have WBS making profits on the modem and once connection fee than having way way too many people crammed onto every basestation to make a few extra pennies to reach thier targets.

Why ?

It seems obvious to me that WBS are going to want to get as many customers onboard as is possible ?
They are not going to be content with a few thousand and will almost certainly be aiming to for ADSL's current 50 000 people user base !

I find it hard to believe that some people will defend such an incredibly high modem cost.
I understand that there's always a higher cost involved for early adopters, but the cost of the iBurst modem is really out of whack - yes, so was the Sentech one way back when, but that was covered in what, at the time, seemed like a good 24 month contract deal ! (heh - how so many of us got burned there !)

R2800 is a massive initial outlay for many people, myself included. I'd go for R1500 no problem - and that's 3 times more than an ADSL modem.

well, if they wanted 50 000 users they would have a way cheaper modem dont you think. I didn't think the modem price was too much, it was a cost I was willing to pay and others too, and actually WBS want to have 10 000 users by end of year. 2500 every 3 months, I think they can make that cut if they dont take too many backward steps. ADSL is for the masses really, thats why they have ADSL 192 and stuff. BTW matt, just a small request can we stop talking about ADSL in the iBurst threads.
