Well it is technically, sometimes. But all depends on signal, which you will always get, but not neccesarily strong.

Most of the time it will be slightly faster than 1mb, but not even for international most of the time. It wil also probably end up with worse pings most of the time, even though MyADSL guys recently said it got better international pings than ADSL. Not shure how this is possible. But most importantly the price of data is crazy. R499 for a gig, only slighty cheaper if you buy a bundle.. hmm its a bit much for real internet use.

I dont think you have to write off Iburst because of Halicons bad experience. Just try it out for yourself, it could just work really well for you and then youve got a great option in Iburst. You can trial it for a week and give it up if you dont like it, so why dont you just give it a try.

do you still have to buy the hardware for it to work and when it doesn't suit you then give it back? and get a refund or what?
 
Um.. something like that, or Ithink you lend the equipment from your reseller/Iburst and then just give it back or buy it once the week is over.

Im not too shure my self becuase I never actually did this, but I did enquire with my reseller if it was possible and he confirmed it.

Either way I dont think you will lose out on money, except maby paying a reseller to set up your connection (mine charged R250 but that included drilling a hole for my UTD's aerial), but that is really not neccesary its pretty easy to do it yourself.
 
how does the cap usage work< does it have the same accounts like adsl has with same expensive prices? i mean do you know if you get like 10 or 30gig cap a month for a fair price?
 
No, you dont get over 9 gig packages, but you can buy expensive extra cap.

Where most people get their addisional usage is with the 64kb after cap access. This is unlimited and works very well for a 64kb connection.

The accounts are bought in connection with your whole service , its all one product. The 1 gig is R469, 3g R599 6g R899 and 9g R1099. (if you buy the modem upfront, which is cheaper now)

So thats the equivelant of a ADSL ISP account and the line rental. Plus you get 64kb which usually get you anextra gig or so if you use itjust at the end of the month, or you can just blow your cap early and keep downloading at 64kb.
i.e. you could get the 6gig account and finsih your 6 gigs early then still easily dl another 4 gigs at 64kb (well not that easy) and only pay R899. Or get the 1 gig account and blow that right from the start and just download with 64kb most of the month, may people do that to save money.

Fantastic1, when did the Umhlanga get coverage or get a tower cos over the New Year holidays I was at Umhlanga Ridge couldn't get f@ckall out of my UTD?
 
No they arent going to, that is what someone said they NEEDED to drop the prices by in order to have reasonable broadband and to provide it to alot more people.

Telkom will say that it just isnt economicaly viable for them, which is crap.

They will probably drop by anoth 17% or thereabouts. It will vary for each line rental option I presume, just like the last price decrease. But it wil be coming, so you can factor it in if you are comparing ADSL with Iburst. Also Iburst will be upgrading to 2mb/s sometime, hopefully this year. You can think about that too.
 
Halicon, have you tried connecting to another tower in the vicinity? I took my utd to a friend's house in Heuweloord, close to Wierda park in Centurion, and picked up a fantastic signal from Midrand Tower - some 11km away! (Thanks, tracestar). Speeds from the Midrand tower are good, btw - I get 80KB/s on average. (It helps to live within spitting distance, so don't take my speeds as law :))
 
if you dont like iburst ... then connect your lan cable to the trip switch on your power box to get faster speeds :)
 
both Alan Snr and Jnr are good people and if you meet them or do business with them, they are very fair people....
