iBurst - Frist impression.

Sheesh I was just filling in an application form for IBurst, but after reading this thread I'm not so sure.

I didn't want to get tied down to a 24month contract, but with the ridiculous prices of the modems(1820? --- me thinks we are being ripped off?) out there, I decided to apply for the 'Playa' package.

After this thread I'm scared...what would you recommend I go for instead?

Rather go for Vodacom or MTN. Or, if possible, telkom WiMAX... but stay away from iBurst.

you could always buy second hand... I might have mine up for sale soon... it's going to become a door stop soon :)

Wait...won't he have to pay in for the cancellation?
if you purchase the modem and take out a month to month then you don't have to pay a cancellation fee... just have to FIGHT their retentions department for a cancellation...

@Poppy,if you insist on getting ibust make sure you go the month 2 month route and use a reseller not the ibust company, and if you live in CT I have my UTD modem in it's original packaging totally unsoiled, this you can have for R500 if you are interested.

Oh sorry I assumed he was on contract.

Fishfly please let me know what kind of modem it is and how much you're looking for for it. Does it come with an antenna?

And MrH I'm not insisting. I simply dont want any wires nor do I want contracts. If you would also answer my questions to Fish also.

I'm curious as to why you're both selling and what you're currently using.

I'm on ADSL for over a year now.

Even though I do like the iburst system and probably had one of the better connections as far as stability and speed goes, BUT just dealing with that company and their dreaded accounts departments way of just taking whatever amounts of cash from my bank account as they saw fit was too much stress.
Besides all you ever read about on this forum 99% of the time are very negative posts about that company, most of which is true since I've been down that road myself.

The iburst modem I have is the Grey UTD with ethernet and USB connection, I never had an external antenna since I had full signal strength and +1mbps speeds most of the time.

The modem is still in as new condition in it's original packaging with USB and ethernet cables and power supply.
I was not going to sell it but I've now decided that if anyone wants it they can have it for R500 which is a fraction of the original price which was R2800 when I originally got my iburst connection.

I've been with Telkom for over a year with ADSL and have never had any problems with either the connection or their accounts department, and I'm still very happy with their service (as far as SA internet providers go).

Just thought of something. I've got a SonyEricsson W910i phone. Why can't I use it as a modem and simply get myself data bundles? What would be the impact on my phone though?

Are you tied down to a contract with Telkom?

No I'm on month 2 month with telkom as I will not risk signing another contract since my experience with iburst.

As far as I'm concerned the way iburst runs it's business is criminal.

EDIT: Correction, I never signed any contract with iburst it was all done over the phone but they still had me tied down with a 2 year debit order.

I have the first modem that was released by iburst the White one with the 5 green lights and 1 blue one. It has both the USB connection and CAT5 connection. I do have a antenna but I find it gets worse receiption with it!

As for what am I using... I have both Iburst and DSL :) problem is Iburst isn't giving me the service it use to. Hence why I'm about to CANN it

Try for Telkom's or Screamer's WiMAX if its available in your area. I think they both offer month to month.

Good advice here! A few months ago I applied for a modem at iBurst. They said they couldn't sell me a modem because the coverage was or is poor in Table View. They actually did me a favour! Even for month to month they do credit checks, whether you buy the modem cash or on contract.

iBurst SUCKS!!!
