Hey all,

I used to have adsl, then moved house and had to change to iBurst. Seriously, i cant believe i ever complained about dsl; iBurst is on a whole new level.

Now, I used to play css and dota (mainly) online. With iBurst i can only play dota.

When i play i get some horrible spikes now and then. My signal is 100-98%, but my FER jumps alot; so i assume my main problem is the FER.

Reading around the forums, what i understand MTU is basicly the size of the packets that the connection is sending. So i was wondering, if i set the MTU lower, then my connection would be able to send smaller packets - so if my connection has to resend a packet, it will be able to do it quicker, as it will be smaller. - Does this make any sense?

So, im basicly wondering if making my MTU less, will it help dota? - I dont really care about the bandwidth my connection can handle, but rather lowering my FER.

Anyone have any suggestions? I already have an antenna.

Thanks

ICE

Set the MTU to 1352. Thats prety much all that wil work. You can try some other settings but 1352 is almost 100% the best option.

And most people cant play CSS online with Iburst. Thats normal, DOTA should work fine.

So you rate the whole "level" of broadband on how well your games run online.. Wireless wont be able to do FPS properly till WiMax comes along. Unless you have a perfect signal and very unsaturated badwidth.

Well the FER will jump a bit no matter how good your connection I think, so what percentage FER do you get?

Ok thanks Ekhaatvensters...

I knew from the beginning that fps gaming would be a thing of the past when i signed up for wireless, so i knew that I couldn’t play CSS.

I also don’t rate the whole "level" of broadband on gaming, but latency is certainly one of the major factors. I have had many other issues with iBurst, everything just varies way too much.- Surely no one can disagree that dsl is superior to iBurst?

Anyways, thanks again. ;)

iBurst, MyWireless, 3G and other spectrum sharing/time division technologies share the same problem. Unpredictable latencies. This is due to the fact that many people share the same spectrum and the base stations have to reprioritise transmissions to low-signal clients between stronger signal clients so that the former don't "drown out" the latter.

ADSL technologies don't suffer much of such latency issues, as there is a dedicated medium (copper) between you and the DSLAM.

For gaming, most kinds of wireless solutions are generally a no-go.

The big advantage of iBurst is that you can move house today, plug in your iBurst modem @ the new house and - voila! - you're online.

My best friend had put in an order for ADSL 6 months ago when they moved from Fairie Glen to Irene - and he is still waiting for Geldbom.

He got an iBurst laptop modem and has never mentioned the world 'Telkom' to me again. He is very happy with iBurst.

Oh, last but not least, I HATE Telkom so much and just don't want ANYTHING Melkhom in my house. It's as simple as that.

F@@k Telkom, for screwing our people every day.

kingrob, I hate Telkom too, and that's the reason I've had it since December 2004, but I simply cannot handle the sh1tty latency for gaming anymore, and have decided to suck satan's thingie and get ADSL.

Okay of course you dont rate broadband by gaming... I should have asked if there were other problem as well.

I have also used ADSL and Iburst of course, and I do see the difference in stability. But in SA were not so worried about a superior technology than the pricing given to it by the owners. iburst can be great value for money and is atleast fast most of the time. Also depends how good your signal/tower is.

For what I pay and given the speeds I get, as ekhaatvensters states the value for money satisfies me (or at least it did last I check which was granted a couple of months or so ago).

I was however sadden last night when I was booted from a bzflag server for lag :(

Last night was pretty bad, this morning the lag was terrible. Me and a froiend who is also on Iburst were playing DOTA and the lag was insane. Worst ive ever had.

Could it be due to the rain and clouds? peopel say that cn have aneffect on Iburst.. is this true?
