Hi,

I had the Sentech 256K and it didn't "really" work with skype.. Sund quality was very poor and constant hiccups.

Will iBurst be good for skype?

Thanks
jacauc

Skype works perfectly well on my Iburst. Used for several hours a week, at various times of the day.

Doesn’t work in Cape Town CBD during office hours.

Hi there

If you connect to any of the towers in Cape Town’s CBD, you are out of luck as it’s rather poor with regular disconnections and bad sound quality.

Before 10 am and after 6 pm it is usable but without video.

Skype is Excellent. Skype with Video also works a treat. I'm on Tableview and sometimes Goodwood towers in Cape Town

Hyde Park BS here, skype works wonders with my connection :)

but beware skype video and skype phone tends to use a lot of bw!

As I posted earlier:

I am on the Kyalami tower, which for some reason gets very highly congested during the day. Phone calls via Skype are possible and very enjoyable, but video during the day is out of the question.

After hours the picture changes completely... Phonecalls with video run like a dream, and even conference calls with up to 4 people are of a very decent quality.

When capped, video calls once again fall out of the picture, but phonecalls after hours are perfect. During the day I havent tried phonecalls when capped lately.

Next question :p
What is the average latency on lets say 20 pings to 72.14.207.99 (a google.com server)

I.E.:
Code:
ping -n 20 72.14.207.99
in a command prompt window.

On sentech its rather crappy on:
Ping statistics for 72.14.207.99:
Packets: Sent = 20, Received = 18, Lost = 2 (10% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 355ms, Maximum = 717ms, Average = 479ms

As you can see that's not great at all, so i'm looking for anything better.
Cheers
jacauc

Ping statistics for 72.14.207.99:
Packets: Sent = 20, Received = 20, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 358ms, Maximum = 435ms, Average = 377ms

Better??
This is with a pretty poor connection (4-5 on uttracestar) but too a quiet tower.

So you took that test at 1:22am wit hSentech, and got 2 lost packets and a ping in the 700's..

But the minimum is good, and the average isnt that bad really. The lost packets will kill you however..

Your iBurst connection will be able to beat that like Daveogg showed, but it does depend alot of your tower load and the time of day, and your signal. With a mediocore connection you should experience something better than that Sentech connection especially so late at night.

ok, well my results during the day arent great... will try another session tonight...

Ping statistics for 72.14.207.99:
Packets: Sent = 20, Received = 20, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 444ms, Maximum = 2543ms, Average = 960ms

Well, so this means that iburst uses Satellite right? It's not on the Telkom SAT3 Fiber, cause i would assume that would be faster.

anyways this is what I get now:
Ping statistics for 72.14.207.99:
Packets: Sent = 20, Received = 18, Lost = 2 (10% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 419ms, Maximum = 819ms, Average = 561ms
and:
Ping statistics for 72.14.207.99:
Packets: Sent = 20, Received = 18, Lost = 2 (10% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 443ms, Maximum = 817ms, Average = 600ms
and:
Ping statistics for 72.14.207.99:
Packets: Sent = 20, Received = 16, Lost = 4 (20% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 460ms, Maximum = 869ms, Average = 625ms
(with no downloads or other activity obviously)

So it seems like sentech's biggest problem is the packetloss.

Well, so this means that iburst uses Satellite right? It's not on the Telkom SAT3 Fiber, cause i would assume that would be faster.
No iBurst uses Verizon who use SAT3 exclusively. It's just congestion.

jacauc, my crappy iburst conection could beat those pings now, but not by much, it would be almost the same, probably with no packet loss though.

But a better iburst connection (Mine is pretty bad) should be quite a bit better.

Okay I just tested mine a few times, always a bit lower than your (the average) and no packet loss whatsoever. Packet loss it what really kills a connection like I said.

ADSL 384 will beat iburst in terms of quality and latency on skype.
Unless you have a brilliant connection and live "underneath the tower".

Ok these are results from a saturday morn test, and I am capped...

Ping statistics for 72.14.207.99:
Packets: Sent = 20, Received = 20, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 341ms, Maximum = 708ms, Average = 442ms

Well latency doesnt change when you are capped.. I believe its better because its a Saturday..

Thats still a very nice average though, especially when you got a spike up to 700ms.
