How's the reception in this area? I have MW brought home from work and reception is pretty good so I thought I'd give iBurst a try. I've spent 2 hours reading through this forum on both Sentech and WBS and seems like there's flames on both sides. So I just want to get an idea to see how happy people in the area are with their iBurst connectivity.

BTW, I'll be hooking this up to my Netgear wireless router. Sentech's works so hopefully iBurst will too.

Wonder when we'll get some decent speeds like overseas. I miss my cable modem! :D

In general- iBurst outperforms MyWireless and is cheaper. No contract needed! The flames on the iBurst side are because some people are miffed at others like me because I get speeds and I can do p2p and other's cant and refused help from us!

iBurst should work with your Netgear router yes.

Forgot to mention- Dainfern does not have a tower directly in the area. Some are near it so my suggestion to you is to get a reseller to come and test signal there BEFORE doing anything else

Bumzilla im in fourways, The tower is in the Indaba Hotel, it should work fine. Mine does.
But as Kei says get a reseller to come test it at your place.

Thanks Bjorn & Kei.

I know iBurst is slightly cheaper, but has capped downloads whereas Sentech is not. So you guys think it's better to sign a year lease or purchase the box and go month to month? Money isn't really an issue if I'm paying under R1500/month :p Just want stable connection and good speed for ftp, p2p etc etc.

the reason sentech dont cap downloads and iburst do is because iBurst is 1mbit, you don't go faster than that in this country, I mean seriously in prelaunch when there was no cap we could murder 250 - 300GB a month, thats why they need to cap it, no company in SA can survive those costs.

as for your question, its hard to say, lots of peopel just went for the contract and tried to cancel it later which WBS let them and they returned the modem which sounds great, however in hardtimes WBS might not be so leniant and force people to finish the contract, but on the flip side if you pay for the modem you can go month to month but if you ever leave iBurst you have to flog the modem

Stable connection? - MyWireless is slower but more stable than iBurst - as per the MyADSL Broadband Ratings Report - March 2005...

I will send you my bank account details - will be expecting a monthly deposit of ~R900 :D.

Sure, but can I browse the net with you IC? ;)

With Sentech, I've had problems when I first signed on but they are pretty stable at work for me for the past several months at the Kelvin tower. I'm sure WBS is having the same teething problems.

So decisions...decisions...decisions...perhaps I ought to go with Axxess?

Bumzilla, is ADSL available in your area? If not, then do you need a connection for business or can you put up with a yoyo measure of reliability - if so iBurst will be just fine, if not how much data transfer are you likely to need per month?

I get full signal strength at my folks place in Beverley & at my place in Dainfern ( I live just passed the shopping centre with the News Cafe & Woolies )

The Indaba is just around the corner too both...

Yah BumZilla know what you mean, miss my little 2Mbit Cable Uncapped with Free Modem!

My only problem with iBurst now is there aren't any drivers for the PCMCIA for Mac OS X Tiger. Just bought a new Titanium Powerbook with Tiger pre-installed & it can't be downgraded to Panther so no PCMCIA iBurst on this... how crap is that? Hope they get there stuff together QUICK!

So yah im actually writing this from my spot in Dainfern on iBurst [ Ethernet Modem ], but just to be totally sure get a rep out to check signal, they don't charge for it anyway as far as I know...

Shameless plug for the new iBurst Technical Help forum

undefined, I know one thing about Mac OS X - its name & that's the extent of what I know :D, but perhaps you should suggest Mac OS X drivers for the UTC in [post=177088]this thread[/post] or a new 'Mac OS X UTC Drivers' thread in the iBurst Technical Help forum :).

PS: Welcome to MyADSL :).

that's a rather idiotic generalization...

SOME of us have been using this service since september last year and now suddenly have *** speeds simply due to the fact the iburst don't have enough towers up to actually provide the required throughput per user.

Many of us don't give a damn about the GREAT speeds other have... I simply want what I'm paying for....

Well I think YOU are idiotic!... I am getting what I am paying for so go suck your fingers

I seem to think that on Monday's things are really heated on the forum !

Now who's getting personal... I was referring to the generalization not to you...

Oh well.

Id' simply recommend you keep in mind that the world is not always as PERFECT as you see it. Allow for opinions and variances... an open mind doesn't hurt...

Bumzilla, I am in Lonehill, and i think i am using the Castle tower, but I am not too sure about it. Signal is very good, even without an external antenna but it wasn't so a month ago. WBS seems to have done a lot of work on their network in this area. I am very happy with the service, after a week. Will see how things go on as time passes. But to make sure get a rep to come to your house and check.

On the router side, it should work fine as long as the router supports PPPoE. I am running iBurst through a Gigabyte B49G and it works like a charm

Hi there,

Do you know the iburst have signal in Dainfern?

Thanks a lot!
