iBurst IP's?

Santa,

The behaviour you describe is the same as you'd get with almost ANY other dial-based internet service.

If you want fixed ip addressing it is possible - but I'm not sure if WBS has gone live with that as a package option yet.

I personally really like the idea of a fixed ip address and would seriously consider paying money for it ...NOT that I believe the R200.00pm that was suggested is even remotly reasonable -- R 20.00 pm I'd say is fair... but hey .. that's just me ;-)

Out of curiosity, why? And assuming you use some sort of Broadband router, you can use dyndns ... works like a charm for me ... remote access from the office :o

UUUmmm, i seriously doubt that it should be worth anything, caus if you have seen the screeenshots of the "hacked" iBurst server, all that is required is filling in a checkbox, and a IP address. It would take 30seconds to enable...

They have a list of IP addresses. We all get one. So we are already paying for it. So say this one is for you, and this if for you and so on. What are they running there Windows 3.1??? :p .....

yea lets all hack in and add the static ip, whats do they have to do - nothing completely labour free for them :D

lol, and if i got it correctly we can change all the admin passes and stuff so we can completely lock them out of their own system. Then uncap everyone and enable 2mb speeds. Imagine how fun that would be. Oh yeah i forgot another thing: crediting everyone with the amount that they paid to WBS ;). People would love us...

In my case, I currently suffer from a LOT of disconnections. My Linux router re-connects automatically and quickly, but with a new IP address any transfer sessions I had running break. If they happened to belong to my download manager, they may have a chance at resuming after the TCP sessions reset.

If I got the same IP every time, I would just lose a couple of packets while the connection re-establishes, and those would be re-transmitted soon enough, with much less disruption to whatever I was doing.

Landyman I assume your using dnydns.org ... have you checked if updates are going through from the 1st of the month?

My router refuses to update, switched to other provider (i.e. not dyndns.org) and its working fine again. Am suspecting that WBS are blocking dyndns.org to prevent hosting?

Static IP allows me to keep SSH sessions running through WBS's frequent disconnects, crashes and "just feel like kicking your connection in the arse" behaviour.

I did/do use my own dyndns style implementation and it works well, but I've been testing their Fixed IP service and it has certainly made my life FAR better connectivity wise.

Also, you may have noticed that dns updates sometimes seem a tad "laggy" with wbs... I prefer to ALWAYS be able to get to my box immediately instead of waiting for dns cache to expire ;-)

Does using dyndns' service have a noticeable effect on speed?

Another good reason for fixed IP is that some services simply won't work on dynamic - DNS for example would un-glue its self every time you reconnect.

On that point - does WBS (or iBurst as they now like to be called) have any policy against hosting on their service?

UPDATE: Iburst seems to offer Static IPs at R199 a month now.

And who wants to pay that much for next to nothing?

I think they have offered this for a while already, just i dount that there are more than about 3 people signed up for this. Unless anyone actually wants to host a site or needs it for any other special reason.

Unfortunately that is a fairly market related price.
I was making enquiries a few months and it costs R150 pm to have a static IP registered to a box in a local data centre - seems that its not only the access costs that we are being raped with :( IP's go at about R10 pm overseas...
