Ok...
I need help.
I recently decided to upgrade my wired network to a wireless one.
I got myself the Linksys Wireless - G broadband router model: WRT54G. Things were easy to setup but upon further inspection I found out that certain ports are blocked. Windows live Messenger, DynDNS, and Absa internet banking are some of the services that won’t connect while the Linksys router is managing my connection.
I have tried opening the ports manually for msn through the router setup page, without any luck I have even tried to bypass all the router's blocking by enabling DMZ. NO LUCK.

I don’t know what to do. Is there anybody out there with a similar setup than mine who can give me some advice? Linksys technical support seems to be run my grandmother and I don’t want to put myself through the pain of contacting Iburst and asking them for assistance.

Kind regards,
Johan

Luckily for you I have the exact same setup...

Unluckily for you I had 0 problems setting mine up :(

All ports are unblocked by default so I can only imagine you turned something on to stop it working. Do I sounds like linksys support now?

Turn your logs on and see what is happening. Maybe something interesting will popup and some clever techie could help.

Johan, I am not running a Linksys, but a gigabyte version. Dunno if you have a Universal PnP setup, but some of my ports are also blocked if I don't enable Universal PnP ... try that to start off with, rather than opening/closing ports manually

I have a linksys with the same setup. Also no problems. If you are worried about ports being blocked and you have setup your PC in the DMZ why not turn off your built in firewall. If I recall it is under security.

If no luck maybe you need to look at upgrading your firmware. Hope you do not have to go that far.

Sympathies, but there should be NO reason for your hassles! The Linksys WaRTs are highly regarded and rightly so, so don't go thinking you've bought a lemon on that front! Anyhow, how I would (and do: I've moved 2 friend/clients from MyWi to iBurst now and both have WaRTs) handle it:

- lose the original (ie 'sucktastic') firmware and get at a minimum the DD-WRT micro firmware on (and you have to start here, even if you move up to the others). From there you can upgrade to one of the others, depending on your needs.
- once running on DD-WRT, on the Setup -> Basic Setup page enter your (full, including domain) username/password details *AND* set the MTU to 1352.
- bounce the router, let it autoconnect and get on with your life.... :p

I have also never experienced such issues with my Linksys router. Even on the factory firmware. (I now use HyperWRT) If you have been adjusting settings, maybe you should just hit the reset button, and start again.

ok cool. I updated to the latest firmware and everything seems to be working now so thanx for all ur input!!!! ;)

Quick question,

Do the other none standard firmware apps make that big a diffrence then the standard firmware?

Many are more reliable and stable. They offer a lot more features.

Particularly DD-WRT.

For example, with DD-WRT you can monitor exact bandwidth usage for each of your network users with RFLow collector.

There are many other options and tools for managing your network.

The factory firmware is very basic in comparison.

I have been reading up about the other firmware seems like it does offer a lot more then the standard. So you guys all suggest the DD-WRT firmware. Anything special / strange one needs to watch out for?

You could have problems on a Linksys WRT54Gv5. The version 5 has less memory, and cannot load the full versions of some of the 3rd party firmware. SO you have to use a nobbled "mini" version.

If you have v4 or earlier, DDWRT is excellent. I'm currently using HyperWRT (with Wallwatcher), because it is probably the most reliable of all the 3rd party firmware, and because I don't need many of the extra features in DD-WRT.

But I am seriously considering moving back to DD-WRT, becasue I still haven't found anything to compare with network monitoring capabilities of the RFlow collector.

Thanks. I will give it a try this weekend. If you do not see me in the forums for awhile you know I bricked my router. :D

MSN Issues now

I installed the DDWRT firmware but now I can not get MSN messager live to work at all. Very frustrating.

It is very frustrating. I know.
because until i change the MTU settings it didnt work for me too.
search the iburst thread for the exact MTU.

It will solve you problems onetime.

I am not on IBurst. I am on everyones other favorite wireless ISP. Sentech. As far as I am aware there are no MTU settings to change for them.

Hello coza,

I have to say thanks. Even though I am on sentech changing the MTU size did work. Thanks for the help
