hi all.

this might have been answered already, so feel free to re-direct and or flame :)

i want to set up a network at home that will allow file and printer sharing and internet connection (iburst) sharing. there will be 1-4 machines connected through a switch.

what is the best way to approach this? (excuse the lack of network genius!)

should i get use a windows server machine or maybe a linux one?

thanks in advance

ummm get an 8 port network hub

why do you need a server

plug all the machines in the hub

run the network wizard, make a network called jonathan or whateva

share all the printers and the drives

but the internet computer the one with iburst attached, when u run setup up that must be the computer that connects to the net

the other three must connect through another computer on the network

bam finished

ROFL, or spider mann...

ok, so i could have a dedicated 'server' machine that could be used as backup and as the gateway for all the other machines?

correct me if i am wrong, but working on a machine to which 3 other people are connected to the internet through is a bit rubbish?

Yeah, it does suck a bit ... You can always go for a Wireless Broadband router (which will set up the connection to iBurst). then you can either use the 4 Ethernet ports to connect your machines, or wirelessly if you have wireless cards

ummm well i dont see why you need a server

4 ppl can happily operate without a server

i did this for a company with iburst

cost me 100 bucks for hub and had everyone seeing each other and using the net in 40 minutes

no server

the easiest and method is get a broadband router, if youy are a cheap skate then use internet connection sharing wizard and a cheap ass hub

lets see a router is what between 600-1000 rand

to do the same thing as what i did for 100?

lol thats not cheap skate that saving a company money

i hope your not into this kinda work guru making companies pay alot more than they have to

shame

Iburst uses PPPOE so any router that has a WAN port will work. I use a WTG54g Wifi Access point, (1 WAN port, 4 LAN ports and Wifi) I have also used a DLink-614 Access point. Iburst is broadband so most routers that can do PPPOE can do the trick. As far as I know, any broadband router will work (NOT ADSL router).. even ADSL uses PPPOE for connectivity.
