The Mindset of Running an Fserve or Offering Data To Others
Bear in mind that its not always about what you can immediately 'get' - sometimes its a case of join a hub with some stuff, and then leave it alone and do other things, and let folks get from you.
DC++ is a mixture of immediate gratification as well as simply being charitable and providing something for others. The use of torrents as a method has made people a little unused to this 'give and take' approach that's still widespread amongst those who run Fserves on IRC for instance.
Sometimes there's something in the immediate area that you want, other times, there isnt - so then you just leave your Serve going and do other stuff - thus letting people browse or take whatever they want, without you stressing about it.
Whereas the torrent user mindset is 'give me something NOW - and if I cant find something to download from anyone right here immediately, I'll leave'.
Its fine to have that approach, but it's not really productive in the context of providing goodies for others.
When I'm on local anything, I know that there's absolutely nothing that I can get from anyone that's of any interest to me at all. So what? Do I disappear from local because of this? Nope, I run the serve, and leave it alone and look elsewhere for what I'm into. It doesn't cost me anything to do this, and others benefit from this approach.
Sometimes there's an immediate reward for offering goodies, other times its just the satisfaction and good karma of offering something for nothing.
I've noticed local users generally aren't used to this approach, as we've all been brutalised by the expensive b/w costs - but generally overseas, amongst users who've got the b/w and time, and have been on long enough to learn - this is the right kind've approach to have, that helps everyone. So you get leeched off.
Great. Its not a negative - it means 'others are benefitting from your generosity.' And that's kind've cool.
Offer what you can, and if there's nothing there that you want, bummer, leave things running and go look elsewhere. 'Getting stuff' isnt the only reason for being online, sometimes 'giving stuff' is just as rewarding. What's it cost you - if you're perm online? A few KB of data going to others. That's positive energy you're putting out.
One needs to use a different mindset for online, compared to the real world of capitalist-consumerist-grabbing of everything in sight.
In real life you may not want to give anything to others at all, that's fine - but online, its kinda cool to be able to have the generosity of spirit to say 'here's what I've got, grab whatever you fancy, I dont mind - and maybe when you've grabbed everything you want - who knows, maybe you'll adopt the same approach to others online, and duplicate this attitude and spread it.'
Doesn't matter if folks leech or not, because it costs you nothing to give things away, and its a good learning experience to get some satisfaction online, from letting others take what they want from you - as opposed to the real-world grubby philosophy of 'taking from others'.
