im also a noob, -isie i have a desktop modem but connected to my pc with usb cable, would it make a diff if i instead connected the network cable ?

depends which area you located, i so far have not needed an antenna get pretty good signal, if you can find the best place in your house where you get the best signal and speed then leave the modem there, and see how good it is first before investing in an antenna then if using pc try n put the pc there or use a long networkcable to the modem. I would rather save the money and invest in a router (I love the linksys one :) ) that way if you have a laptop you can connect to the router through wifi or if no laptop u can pick up a usb wifi for your pc cheap.
I built my whole home network around my iburst connection (xbox, laptops, pc ,tablets etc) on router.

I use a paid news service (easynews) and i get 3.3GB between 12-8 every night. Torrents is just so undependable. Just try one of the newsservice providers. Most of them got a free trail period.
