Iburst slow?

It's fine between 02:00 and 07:30. From 10:30 onwards, it's just about unusable (where I am anyway). On Tues, it took me 2.5 hours to download FF 3.0.5 (~8.5MB) using ubuntuzilla.

ping 174 ms to Joburg; 745 Kbps / 300 Kbps - much better than the usual 350 Kbps which is the norm, but don't think it will last much longer...

I've noticed it, wheres the burst in iBurst?
When I start a download, and I'm talking about a 400 kb file here, it starts off at 0.2 kbps and takes about 1 min to actually start downloading at a decent speed.

yes, mine is so slow, like a donkey thats got aids and is on its last leg walking to the water pit ............

It has been slow...

Went from 750 down to anything between 150 and 350

latency still fine though at 150ms

Hi all.

Please mail me directly with usernames, location and contact details if you are experiencing abnormally slow speeds.

It would also help if you mail me your speed test results from the iBurst web site.

I will arrange a check to see what could be causing your regradation once the above info is received.

Thanks

Cheers

The problem seems to be that anything other than http type downloads is being shaped to next christmas. I'm getting around 40MB/s on http and 0 on anything else.

I'm in Weltevreden Park. When I took out the contract about a year ago, the speed was great. But for about the past two, three months the speeds have been appalling. Approached the iBurst helpdesk, which was an exercise in futility. Got better service from the MWEB guys who helped me upgrade my mtu settings. Made the connection more stable, but not much effect on speeds. iBurst's advice ended with, 'get an external aerial'. I have 100% signal strength, but my understanding is that 100% signal strength does not equal 100% speed. My suspicion is that it's a congestion problem, like we had about three years back when the company I worked at moved to the Randburg CBD and took out iBurst. If you wanted to download anything over a 10MB file and didn't want to wait 5 hours, you could do it either before 7:30 am or after 6pm.

iBurst speed test claims my speed to be 490KBps. Actual speed is around 20KBps if I'm lucky. The other evening it showed 7 BYTES per second... Am now going through a second atempt to get a straight answer as to why this is happening.

Using the iBurst speedtest? What part of my cynicism and experience over using the iBurst speedtest results did you miss? If he offered an independant site I'd be more encouraged.
:D You can't tell me anything about iBurst (see my sig)...was merely pointing out the recently stated requirements for getting SG himself to attend to your problem.

Yeah, don't mind my grouchiness. Just sick and tired of these so-called 'help desks, which are manned by people who are generally anything BUT helpful. Like I said earlier - the last time it was the MWEB people who helped me out when the iBurst lot proved to be useless. How weird is that?

Ping & Security Now

Another variant of the slow network problem. From my usual ping package (I must find a replacement for the peered local site I used to use):

----83.138.189.100 PING Statistics----
66 packets transmitted, 55 packets received, 16% packet loss
round-trip (ms) min/avg/max = 230/702/4030

----196.30.31.120 PING Statistics----
66 packets transmitted, 65 packets received, 1% packet loss
round-trip (ms) min/avg/max = 40/479/5080

Anyone else having a problem getting Security Now on iTunes? If you check for a new podcast with iBurst, nothing shows up. If you check with MTN, no problem. If you start the podcast download with MTN, pause, and then resume with iBurst it works - although at about one third of the MTN speed.

Just noticed an interesting aspect to the iBurst speed test - you can highlight and copy and paste everything on that page.....except the actual results.

Download speed 56.6 kbps
Upload speed 200 kbps
Quality Service 65%
Jitter 38.5 ms
MOS score 2.6

Finally, the test shows what other speed tests showed: that in spite of a 100% signal strength, my download speeds are laughable. Anyone know off-hand how long these iBurst contracts last so that I can trash it and find a decent service?

iburst like GPRS

The last week my iburst is so slow I can only view gmail in basic HTML. GPRS would be better ...

Don't worry, it's not only iBurst thats being slow.

At my work we've got 6 Mbps International through SAIX 1:1 and via London I'm only getting 2-4KB/s where as sites via US West Coast gives me round about 300 KB/s to 400 KB/s.
