iBurst softlaunch prices

I'm offering free International bandwith ... you guys can all connect via my ADSL connection and then use my satellite connection for international downloads .... no cap .. no port shaping ...
128kb line with a 1:20000 user contention .... (this is a best effort service providing that my GF doesn't pull out the network cable)

We are Telkom - Resistance is Futile - You will be Assimilated

I agree with Rodent, not much here to compete with ADSL. After some more thought here is a little extra for WBS (and everyone) to consider...

At most ISP's you can get 128k ISDN for around R200. Now granted you can't be connected 24/7 (unless you have very deep pockets) however you can connect 12/5 and the whole weekend for a reasonable amount. In this time you can max out the connection and the ISP will not tell you you're abusing the connection.

Now considering that ISP's have to pay for the bandwidth to support 128k ISDN users at R200 per month is it not reasonable to expect iBurst to run at 128kb/s after the cap, especially since you're forking over R600 per month? This would also put it in line with Sentech's 128k offering (assuming that at some stage they sort themselves out). In fact many people are willing to pay R600 for 24/7 128k without the need to burst up to 1 mb/s as long as it works! What do you guys think?

Of course not. What would anyone do with your left ball?

ICASA has the balls - they just don't have the power to do what they want to cos Ivy's broken legislation prevents them from doing their duties the way they want to.. maybe pass them balls on to Ivy to change the legislation [:)]

OK, so Sentech offers a broadband service, no cap, good speeds at good prices. And everybody jumps up and down with joy - happy, happy happy. Six months later and it is a total and absolute ballsup.

iBurst (iBust?) offers a service at 1mb/s much better than Telkom and SenSux at good prices. Everybody jumps up with joy - happy, happy, happy. Even before official launch some cracks start appearing in the offering.

Ivy KastyDieBoere tells everybody that come Feb2005 the SA telecoms industry will be liberized. Everybody jumps up with joy - happy, happy, happy. Is it only me or is there a pattern emerging here?

clive, you're not alone in your apprehensions. I'm also starting to wander about Feb 2005.

They probaly going to legalise VOIP and charge their mothers price for it. Then they gonna label it "Liberizing The Telecoms Industry". Unfortunately Telkom has way to much power and influence over government and ICASA are nothing in their eyes. So in short we all pretty f*cked for who knows how long.

Tower 90, 256K Package

Try to remain positive, folks, even if only to alleviate the depression and soften the anger we all feel about the situation. OK, now that I've done my Oprah Whinfrey bit - WBS, you'd be well advised to review your intended launch offerings. If you'd like to see yourselves being trashed in the future like Telkrap and Sucktech, the Jerry Springer show will have nothing on us...

mbs this is one package, it is a entry level package, there will be several more packages by our launch. can someone tell me how much it would cost for the type of bandwidth people are saying they want? does anyone here actually know how much it would cost for 30Gigs of bandwidth? would WBS be able to sell a package for R599 a month giving out 30 gigs? i believe there would be well over a 300% loss on that package.

Guys need to reliese untill competition to telkom has opened it is just impossible to get that type of bandwidth for that cheap...

in the USA they pay $1 for 1gig of bandwidth.. i wish we could do that here right now but it is not possible...

I have personally been using the service for 3 months and its brilliant, honestly if you are not happy with this package then take another or another or another or the next, how can everyone sit here and moan and moan before you have seen the rest of the packages..

Because we are the only Technologicaly advanced country in Africa and we are being screwed over left right and centre. Government want to become a 1st World Country. Then they should bloody offer 1st world communications. I am tired of agreeing and working around the current situations. Its about bloody time that these idiots get their act together.

Tower 90, 256K Package

WBS - there's also nothing stopping you from pursuing representations to all the powers that be, concerning unfair trade practices as evidenced by Telkrap's actions. Get together with all the other service providers (VANS/ISPA) and take on Telkrap properly, both in the courts and publicly. I believe you'll have Government on your side - they're sick and tired of being pressurised about the state of our telecomms. The Prez has also cracked the whip, Dr Ivy has made it vaguely clear what is intended come 1st Feb, so now is the ideal time to do something about it.

You should not have to listen to consumer input before realising the correct course of action to ensure your rightful place in the market. The level of activism required is similar to that launched by Sucktech customers about their offerings, and MAD's Hellkom stance about Telkrap. You'll be ensuring yourself a place in history if you actively come out against Telkrap's unfair trade practices - stop the boetie-boetie cr@p for the sake of ensuring future access to the Telkrap-operated backbone, and take a stance for the sake of the broader public and an assured future market, dammit!

sihen, you must be crazy or just plain dumb! If the people at ibust were smart, they'd form a group/whatever and attack telkom, just like mbs said.

Sorry but you're starting to come over as a twit.

-You persist in not acknowledging the difference in cost between local and international bandwidth. 30 gigs of local traffic could certainly be included in the package. WE ARNT ASKING FOR 30 GIGS OF INTERNATIONA L BANDWIDTH.
-You persist in promising that later packages will offer better value for money despite all of us experiancing exactly the opposite from othr providers.
-You keep on promising that the golden pot under the rainbow is "just around the corner".

Get real ...

Another thing ... WBS isn't going to take on the powers that be. Why should they? They're one of a priviledged 3 who have sole access to the market. Hence they can dictate pricing and terms. Ergo their current offer.

They're in a much better position now than what they would be if they actually *gasp* faced some real competition.

Jeeebus people ... stop being so naive.

Harth's spot on:
Within the current legislation, expecting iBurst to provide cheap connectivity is like expecting Cell C to offer cell calls at 10c/min. Simply put, its not going to happen folks!
Until companies like Telkom and iBurst are forced to scrap for every last customer - ie. in a competitive environment - joe public will not see any better prices or any better service.

Essentially we were all expecting iBurst to show some social responsibility and bring cheap local broadband to the masses. They have the power to do it on a local bandwidth side at least.

And once again the collusion and general cartel-based market conditions come to light...

Telkom needs a leash, ICASA needs some guts, and the SA consumer needs to make it happen

sihen, read my previous post. If you're a 128k ISDN user and connect with InfinitCall during after hours and weekends you can pull over 20 gigs per month INTERNATIONALLY... your ISP won't even moan at you. You also get excellent pings and no prioritisation on traffic. So tell me how other ISP's can do this for less than R200 per month? I really don't see how a 30 gig international cap is not feasible at R600 per month. Most of your users won't get anywhere near that anyway. By mirroring Telkom mentality WBS are driving away customers before even getting out the gates.

This is really disappointing. I expected Iburst to be outrageously priced but at least offer a semi-decent service. Heck, I would even be prepared to pay more for a faster service.

It seems like Iburst simply took a leaf out of Telkom’s handbook of how to rip people off. Three gig cap? That is pathetic. Capped to 64k afterwards? Contended with how many other users? Packet prioritization? Why? You already have a laughable cap ala Telkom.

The proof is here in this thread from Billy: http://www.myadsl.co.za/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5394

Several times during the "Presentation" Tseliso Phomane M.D. made reference to "us all making a lot of money", bear in mind he thought he was talking to potential distributors. So expect high prices for low service a la Sentech and Telkom.
Unquote

Rip off.

Internet users in SA are becoming more informed and somewhat jaded with seeing lousy offerings. At this rate Iburst is going to be a flop even before it’s officially launched.
