I live in the Pretoria area and probably receive my signal from the tower in Wonderboom. To pay R699 per month for speeds of 20 kbps is not what I would call great value. I ditches Sentech for Iburst because their service was even worse. For a while my service was reasonable fast, but as their business has grown in Pretoria, there has been a steady decline in download speeds. If things don't get better soon I shall do to Iburst what I did with Sentech. If they cann't offer what they advertise, then maybe they should cut their prices. If you're living in the Kilner Park area, think twice about getting Iburst.

I'm living in Roodepoort, I've had iBurst for one day now. I connect and download and 500+KB/s, and I am very pleased with my service... are you sure maybe a setting hasn't changed or something?

The only gripe I have is that torrents are very slow.

I think there is a problem in Pretoria/Centurion, I'm also getting very slow speeds.

LOL, you don't sound happy. What's your signal strength? Do you use a directional antenna? Have you set your mtu settings? Do you have LOS? Which downloads are you talking about? torrents or http?

Sounds depressing. Anyway have you used UTTracestar (see the iburst forum sticky topics) to analyse your connection.

This will tell you 2 things mainly:
1. How good your signal is, 100% on IBurst means nothing - you need the db
2. How loaded your tower is

If it's no 1 you have a problem with, there are a few solutions that may help. If it's no 2 then your a bit stuffed, keep complaining to IBurst and hope they give you a new tower :cool:

If it's neither then it's probably a technical problem with the tower, phone IBurst and complain.

Good luck.

So you actually think you are getting 20kbps speeds? Maby 20KB/s, but that would be pretty surprising too.

Well if you are on the edge of a towers signal you get dropped off as other join, so you'd need to improve your signal.

If the actualy network has really just been degraded to 20KB/s (or kbps :eek:) well, I'd be a bit surprised. Sucks for you... Oh, and nice going with generalising the whole iBurst network as being yourconnection.. :p lol, okay that was just from the thread name, not your actual post.

Well, when you were complaining about the Iburst problems in CPT didnt you even get 20kbps? I find that hard to believe, thats all.

And btw, I pay them R599 pm unfortunatley :(

And hey, how about that guy with a sig that says "Get Iburst" with a clickable link! :p

Don't worry, some of us pay more...

Hard to believe or not that's what my access speeds were last week, so therefore the complaints - as it is rather annoying paying good money for a service you aren’t able to use.

However, my access speeds have returned to normal, now ranging between 1174.1 - 1610.1 Kbps (as per the Telkom site), this is of course after iBurst’s intervention in the CPT area and also substituting my Poynting Yagi 11 (10 DB Gain) with a Phoenix Flat Panel (18 DB Gain).

If anyone is interested in an antenna to improve his or her signal, I would suggest they have a look at this link: small dynamite I was quite sceptical at first, since it is rather small (A5 paper size) and it is made nearly entirely from plastic but wow, it works!

Don’t worry EHV, just pulling your leg…

Thast small dynamite can be got for R300 form the user GRES on this forum btw.. send him a PM if you are interested I guess.

On that site it is around R600 iirc.

Amazing speeds though micheal... wow, makes me pretty jealous.

You sure it's the same unit?

Thanks, for the info EHV, are you sure it's the same unit, as in performance? Must say it is a definite improvement on the Yagi 11...

Yep, its the exact same one, too bad he's in JHB, ther wise I'd get one.

I guess he supplys them or something like that.

You made your entire homepage simply a pic of the antenna? i guess you havent started using it yet :p

So thats your Iburst modem sitting in that box... interesting, no wonder you get such good speeds, its all about the height you can get out of your modem/antenna.

Ag, im just waiting for my new tower, given up on my connection to the Plumbstead one, its getting too k@k, mostly my fault. A guy just up the road to me has his modem in his roof with a similar set up to yours and gets amazing speeds and pings.

...and the tower...

http://www.see.za.net/gardens.htm , less than 1.5 km away looks further, was a hazy day.

Yeah the UTD is in the box and I'm running 7V via an electrical cable to power the modem, and the LAN cable runs to my Netgear Wireless router.

Let me know if you need some help, and I can assist you with a similair set-up.

As for the site it is one of seven, so I change it when I need to.
:)

Strange as I would not think you'd need an antenna to get full speed from what I can see from that pic.

You say you are running 7v to the modem, but as far as I remember the modem normally runs on 9v unless the new modems use a lower power supply.:confused:

Sorry, my mistake 9V it is...

last image, speed right now

It is 9V, the issue is that I'm up against the hill so my UTD does the signal hopping thing between the Terraces, Table View and Gardens Centre so I needed a directional antenna, tried the Omni as well it just made it worse....

Hmmm, yours is really flying and faster than mine, maybe I should try an antenna to see if it makes any difference.

I ran the same test you used a min ago and I get the following:
-------------
Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

* Download time: 3.672 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 1111.1 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 136.2 (kiloBytes/second)

Not bad at all...

I don’t think the Telkom speed test is accurate though, have a look again at the site, below the updated Telkom test is the iBurst test, quite a bit slower.

The antenna does help though, which tower do you connect to?

I have to say that for my needs, iBurst is pretty good. Downloading now at 80kB/s+. Averaged 90kB/s on a 50MB+ download.
