Right so I thought I would just post a bit of good news. After 3 months of struggling with Telkom to install a telephone line, I eventually gave up, then I tried Telkom LTE and for some reason Telkom decided they didn't want my business, so I thought to hell with them.

I looked at various other options, wireless etc, but everyone's towers were either too far away or behind a tree, and I'd still have to spend 3k + on equipment.

So after rummaging through an old box I came across an iBurst UTU modem, I hooked it up to my laptop and low and behold, 100% signal.

Phoned iBurst today, despite holding on the phone for an hour, I did get to speak to someone and was given a username and password the same day.

Hooked my UTU up to my old raspberry pi via USB, dialled up, shared the connection via wifi, and now I'm surfing showmax with no issues.

I'm pretty chuffed! Thanks iBurst!

Would be nice to get hold of the 2mbps modem, anyone know what they go for? Is iBurst still buying back the old modems?

The 2Mbps modems are great. You can try asking in The iBurst Flea Market thread.

Received with my monthly invoice, 12 August:
Some more great news is that our modem refurb campaign is still in full swing and we are wanting to buy back your old unused modems. We are offering the following to put money back in your pocket:

  • Black desktop modem - R500.00 (Must include: modem, USB, LAN & power cables)
  • 2MB Modem - R650.00 (Must include: modem, LAN & power cables)

The modem must be in proper working order (iBurst will test the device before pay-out). The modem must be paid up (not blacklisted due to bad debt) and have completed the 24month contract. The amounts quoted above are subject to the customer delivering the modem to our iBurst office in Bryanston, Johannesburg. We are able to collect the modems directly from you, less R100.00 on the quoted amount above. This can be arranged with our Retentions Team on 011 100 6550 or emailing [email protected]. The amounts will be paid back within 10 working days of modem return.
