iBurst: Uncapped 16Mbps satellite broadband

Already spoke to a client they might actually consider going this route. This will definitely sell well as redundancy if adsl goes down or worst case scenario there is no ADSL/3G connectivity available where your business is situated. Remember they not catering for consumers, businesses which is a tax write-off :P

Max speed on P2P? Upfront FUP allocation? Daily FUP allocation? Maximum daily FUP carry-over? Speed rate limit on reaching FUP limit?

:wtf:

and this is aimed at companies. Companies generally dont use P2P. and more than likely will be used to push voice over the satellite as well

Uplink too slow to be of any use in a business environment - e.g. VPNs, outgoing SMTP and hosting.

At least we know what we are in for before we get it...

Fair enough and it's nice [different] to see the T&C's clearly stated upfront but then why call it "Uncapped"? Just call it a 16Mbps satellite business solution or something realistic. Calling it Uncapped with a list of restrictions directly below seems contradictory.

latency will be around 1000ms and upload speeds will be slow
Good option for remote locations where no other services exist

Uplink too slow to be useful for business purposes. Can't do video conferencing.

Was just about to say. Upload is horrible especially as that upload is a perfect scenario and it will be likely be lower than what they say. I would prefer at least a 2Mbit/s upload.

I'm fairly sure that R5,439 does not fall inside that range.

Dont forget the equipment purchase R6950 + installation cost R2500 = R9450.

A subscriber can opt to pay the rental instead, but R350 x 24 months is going to cost him/her R8400 + R2500 installation fee = R10900 !!

So not affordable. But I would do it if there was no alternative. Thankfully there is one WISP here, and 3G signal. Due to the hidden cost pointed out and the latency its not for me.

South Africa’s broadband definitions:

In 2006 the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) defined broadband as a service with a minimum download speed of 256Kbps in its ADSL regulations. No downlink speed was provided by ICASA.

The Department of Communications (DoC) recently defined broadband as “an always available, multimedia connection with a download speed of at least 256 Kbps” in its ‘Broadband Policy for South Africa’. No downlink speed was defined.

It is highly debatable whether download speeds of 256 Kbps are adequate to use all current Internet services without a fair amount of irritation

ASA already ruled on this kind of thing against the provider

The iBurst radio advertisement essentially says “…Get iBurst now. It’s fast wireless broadband internet and email”. ASA says in the ruling that a broadband connection, at the very least, should deliver a minimum speed of 256 kbps. This is in line with the recently released ICASA ADSL regulations, but interestingly enough ICASA said that their ADSL broadband definition does not really apply to wireless broadband.

So it really is a capped broadband package which functions as a narrowband uncapped package on reaching cap.
