The other day I was in a fued with a random person at the office about the latencies of both ADSL and iBurst.

This random person tried to confince me that iBurst is installing more and more towers across te country and that the latencies of iBurst is decreasing on a daily basis and are (on that day) the same as ADSL and that the problem with wireless connections (such as iBurst) and high latencies is a problem of the past... I am aware of towers being errected everywhere, but about the latencies?

Can anyone please comment on this for a 3rd-party opinion...

Just make him a strong cup of coffee

IMHO - erecting more towers will not reduce your latencies, it will basically improve coverage and if it's within a congested area it will mean more speeds for you.

Best joke of the day :D

Thanks for the laugh! :D:D

Fixed-wire is still king above wireless - fixed-wire still have its advantages when it comes to speed. As for the towers being erected, is there a link regarding that?

What native said, I can only echo - more towers won't reduce your latency, it will give you better coverage, and hopefully, better speeds. But with the draconian shaping policies which iburps employ, I don't think there will be any real advantage.

That was exactly what I told this random person as well. I honestly think he is a firm believer in "what you can't see" aka wireless.

Latency will always be higher on wireless than fixed-wire end of story, the drawback with fixed-wire in SA is that at some stage it tends to get stolen.

In which case wireless trumps fixed-wire then...

don't know whether to :( or to :D

Maybe, but just wait until the thieves turn their attention to the towers for the antennas, backup batteries etc, a fair bit of valuable metal there.:rolleyes:
