iBurst vs ADSL

All good and well - as long as you don't move house like I do.

I rent, and we are planning to move within the next 8 months, so getting ADSL now would mean an extra hassle for me; I've seen the long delays, etc. posted about in the relevant forums.

I have no debit order with iBurst - I pay them. No worries there.
I made them give me the discount when my contract expired.
No problems there. I live under the tower - 2 kms as the crow flies. No problems there.

For some, iBurst is actually the better option. I just wish the prices would come down.

Same boat here, but next year i'll be more stable in my living location :)

Yeah it was your post that informed me about the vouchers.;)

When I went to purchase a voucher I got a dumb look back from the guy behind the counter so I told him to go to "Options" for prepaid cell airtime and then enter the following code:

87000070 <---- this is for 1GB @ R70

After that it went smoothly and now next time there won't be a problem.:D

And for the 2GB just change the "70" in the code to "140" and so on for the other vouchers.
Another option is to take the expired voucher back as sample.

I also had to show the guy on his list of codes which one to use...

...but I don't complain, as it's more convenient to plonk R70 or whatever down, get the voucher and have no worries about debit orders that'll drain your account. :D

Now if only somebody'll bring in prepaid ADSL... :D

I'm absolutely sick of iBurst and their monumental f-up with my account... i'm looking to switch to ADSL, the 1gb special from m-web looks very attractive, but there's no usage after you hit the cap, is there anything similar that includes usage after the cap?

"ISPs taking Telkom on

Various local ISPs are making the most of Telkom’s DSL access price reductions, and have already launched their new pricing structures.

MWEB, one of the first large ISPs to introduce a special offer which takes advantage of the new pricing, are retailing their ‘all inclusive ADSL service up to 384K’ for R179-00 per month.

This price is applicable for the first six months and – like Telkom’s offer - includes the DSL 384 access charge and a 1 GB monthly usage allowance. The price thereafter is R 219-00 per month.

Cybersmart is charging R 169-00 for the same service and leads the way in the pricing department, followed by Web Africa’s R 174-00, SAINET’s R 189-00 and XDSL’s R 193-00.

In the combined price 4 Mbps – 3 GB department, SAINET leads the way with a price of R 509-00, followed by Cybersmart’s R 524-00, Telkom’s R 554-00 and WebAfrica’s R 579-00."

MrH - I think Do1 is the only hardcapped doBroadband package.

EHV - That is why I am on a month-to-month contract. If they give notice that do3 will change policy, one month's notice and I no longer have Telkom as an ISP. In the meanwhile I enjoy the 6GB.

Yes if their policy changes then I will also move along to greener pastures, at least no contract or debit orders involved this time which is a relief.

I hit 6,3GB at 4min to midnight on the last day and stopped downloading even though I was still not capped in case it got carried over <--(memories of iburst taking last session from the new month) so I'm still not sure when the cap will kick in but I'll check this month for sure.:)

MrH the cap kicks in anywhere between 6GB and over 7GB from what I have seen. It seems though the systems may be becoming more accurate to cap very close to 6GB.

900-1000kbps??? Are you sitting on a tower in the middle of the Karoo???

LOL, not likely but I had one of the better connections as far as I know and almost always had good speeds from iburst.:D

My problem is not with the iburst system it's with the incompetent company running it.:(

Thanks milomak I'll keep an eye on it this month as I have a 2GB Axxess voucher in case I get capped early.:)

Yeah I also ran at 900kB/s+ for the last part of 2006 and 2007 till I cancelled. 4MB ADSL was just a better value for money proposition. Especially given I was not intending on being mobile with my connectivity.

If you look at some older "TelkomISP capped users for xmonth" threads, there was a sys admin working at Telkom who implemented the system where everyone gets exactly double their cap, except the 1GB packages. I think after that if it's early in the month you would still be allowed a few more gigs until the old system of the pool of users reaching 3GB hardcapped you.

However he has stopped posting. For now the system is still there...

ADSL might be like R150-200 more expensive.

But whats R100 these days? Just buy less junk food, and then you have decent connection atleast.

Wireless Internet is a nightmare for many of its users.

hey, do those prepaid vouchers come in local only aswell?

As far as I know the Axxess vouchers do not, but maybe one of the other ISPs have local vouchers I guess you need to do a search.

The DO level3 is R554 for a month 2 month 3GB cap which is actually capped at (6GB for now anyway) and my iburst 3,5GB was costing me R699 so I'd hardly call ADSL more expensive.:p

For the difference you can get an IS 30GB local only account as well.

ADSL is cheaper, in almost every case. Especially with the newest price drops and ISP competition, it will only get better on ADSL...
