Hi guys... has any of you used smoothwall with Iburst... I am an average technical guy ready for any challege and My friend Introduced me to Smoothwall... with quick scanning of the usermanual I able to setup two computer to use the net... all seemed fine Until I noticed that I could not access some of the more secure sites like banks and stuff. Was this due to my setting as all I mainly did was set up the PPPoE on the network page. I was not that much happy with the speeds so I dont know if I should blame Iburst or My configuration. the smoothwall pc is a 300mhz 128mg and 1.5gb. and Is there a substitute for smoothwall out there..... :confused:

I used Smoothwall Express 2 with iBurst quite successfully, and now I am using the very same SWE2 installation with ADSL - just changed PPPoE username & password from what it was for iBurst.

There is a bunch of stuff in a thread somewhere in the iBurst forum about SWE2, but it sounds like you have it installed & setup already, so you probably don't need to read that thread...

About not being able to access some secure sites [https], SWE2 does appear to choose an optimal MTU - mine was always 1432, what MTU is your SWE2 using?

Force the MTU to 1352 <cringes for fear of tomatoe pelting>, might solve the problem.

THanks for the replies, Where do I find the Mtu settings for the smoothwall Machine, I currently removed SW and tried ubuntu but failed in my five attempts of installations. I will be installing SW later today and I hope to keep it that way. I heard that they have discontinued Updating SW, How True is this?

If you want to change rp-pppoe's default mtu open /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf, scroll down to the bottom and find the following line:
PPPD_EXTRA=""
change it to
PPPD_EXTRA="mtu 1352"
restart rp-pppoe the next time you connect the mtu will default to 1352.

That's from before SWE2 - SW have a commercial product, and after much protest released SWE2 which is updated, but more so by the community that actually use SWE2.

You can also try IPCop.org - an offshoot of SW from before the time of SWE2, and as a result of the discontinuation saga.

About forcing MTU, you would have to shell into your SWE2, and 'ifconfig'.

Where to find your current MTU in SWE2:

Its Me Again....Stuck.... I cant seem to get to the part where I change My mtu settings... I can see my mtu its 1500 but that is as far as I can get... I cant seem to get to the "/etc/ppp/pppoe.conf" Part... do I do this on My pc cause the smoothwall command prompt cannot access the folder...

The mtu you are seeing is probably the one set for the network cards rather than the ppp connetion. You also need to be root to access /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf. Unfortunately I have never used smoothwall. I opted for iptables :(

I started with smoothwall, but moved fairly quickly to ipcop as I found it worked better for me with Iburst. I've also found it easier to tweak.

Guess What the people... I have been connected for 12H 13m 50s and still going strong... Earlier yesterday I got download speeds of between 80 - 100 kbps. I found the way to change my mtu and this is the easiest way:

Log in as root and:
ifconfig eth(RED) mtu (your optimum MTU)

Example:
ifconfig eth2 mtu 1428

Replacing (eth2) with your adapter and (1428) with your desired mtu

THanks to the People!!!!!!!!!!

Just remember to do it again when you reboot smoothwall - that's why you probably want to put it in a startup script...

using smoothie as pppoe dialer with Iburst

Hi guys.You seem to have cracked the problem of connecting smoothwall directly to the Iburst modem.
I get PPPD CONNECT PPP0 <---> /DEV/TTYP1
PPPOE READ (ASYNCrEADFROMPPPP) SESSION 122 iNPUT/OUTPUR ERRROR

DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS

regards

C

Hi guys

Does anybody have a walkthrough on how to connect Smoothwall to an iBurst modem?

I will appreciate it if you can post the links here.

Kind regards

Can one connect iBurst to a Smoothwall enabled PC using the USB connection?
