hopefully heaven but probably hell
I have noticed over the past two weeks ibursts performance has been dismal, not to say it was good prior its current state.

maximum bursts i get these days is like 20-25Kb and i know phoning hell-desk will award me with some monkey telling me either:

- check my MTU
- check my signal
- check for spyware

I would like to know if anyone in my area is experiencing the same sloppy, slow, third rate and third world performance?

Kyalami / Sunninghill area.

I think my base station is Kyalami Castle.

Regards
H

I suppose hoping for an iburst representative on this forum to answer is like hoping for a 'normal' internet connection from these clowns?

Hi Halicon

That's all you'll get from iBurps - they don't bother in coming back to you at all.

I would suggest that you look at other alternatives, these being Telkom ADSL, Vodacom/MTN and get rid of the millstone that is iBurst for good.

Also iBurps seems to be the most expensive of the lot at this stage.

Unfortunately there are no telkom lines coming in here and to top it off i have no reception for cell phones. I am considering Neotel, but am worried about their current service and will wait for a bit.

Oh man, that surely must sucks :(

I do hope Neotel will be able to help you out.

I'm in the same area (though we have telkom lines, and I've learned to RELY on my ADSL connection as a constant backup to iburst, so I guess it's not exactly the same) and performance has been horrendous. 10-15 disconnects a day and 20kBs daytime speeds replacing their already abysmal 40kBs daytime speeds for the last 2 weeks or so.

Well I've taken the plunge and gone the ADSL route. This after being with iBurps since their trial period back in 2004!!!! I just couldn't stand the poor performance as mentioned here, and the fact that they are blocking certain international ISP's from accessing their network. With PayVPN gone, any kind of p2p on iBurps became a lame duck and I have evidence that they've installed new countermeasures against p2p, preventing Limewire and eMule from connecting to the servers.

I've had dsl for the last year... only these last 3 months have I decided to move away from i***... their service is worse and worse... their 64k doesn't work anymore... I think they phasing it out.

So I'm going to take my R599 and go get myself a 10gig account... but fek how am I suppose to change my email/fax and the likes?

I have no real choice, no ADSL, 3G barely works, I am looking at sawireless. Some comments on please. I haven't seen anything anywhere as of late. Anybody using them?

Fishfly, I'm in the same boat now, have been a 'loyal supporter' of iburst for the last 2.5years, but seriously, enough is enough! But then the email thing hits me too, but for the k@k we need to eat from these guys now, I'll just send out a mass email to everybody that needs it, I'm not gonna let something like that keep me back.

I've really had enough! Maybe the ever illusive iburst rep can actually enlighten us as to why the service has gone for a ball.

Word of advice that was passed to me through my own mistakes. NEVER opt for utilising the 'Value Adds' of e-mail, fax-2-mails etc with your ISP as inevitably someone will come along with a better product or you will get p!33ed off with your current ISP and then you have to go through the turmoil of making all the changes.

Reptile, I know how you feel. Would have chucked the iBurst modem ages ago were it not for the fact that our area does not support ADSL, the cellphone SP's signal is carp, Neotel is pulling an iBurst (rolling out all over the place, but not rolling out all over the place) and little or no hope of VANS ever being able to compete against the current incumbents.

iBurps is still the same here in Cape Town. Single connection gets between 30-60KB/sec
while double or three connection downloads get full 110KB/sec.

You are in for some pain now but there are at least two alternative to make the email situation easier the next time around.

1. Use an independent email provider that you are comfortable will be in it for the long haul. Gmail comes to mind as the obvious example.

2. Register your own domain and then redirect your email account(s) on that domain to your current ISP or email account provider.

I've had my email account at my ISP since 1998. There were n't any domain
registrars then which didn't charge $300 per year.

Registering a domain name is a good idea. However using Gmail is not. Gmail even thru a domain name will have your private
emails. Rather go with someone who is more privacy conscious. ? Fastmail

I got my first "proper" internet email address in 1992. Not a lot of people used it so there wasn't much of an issue when I supplemented it with a South African one in 1995. Of course by the time the ISP mergers finally trashed my South African address in 2001 it was a well used one.

The annoyance of that event led me to register my own domain, so I wouldn't have to go through it again. Cost just over £30 a year, including email and web redirection, if I remember correctly. Nowadays its just over $40 a year, including way more server space than I need and more bandwidth a month than I use in a year. And that's the smallest package my host offers! If I wanted to keep things basic, the domain registrars I use throw in email and web redirection for free these days. One of them even does the honours for my free .za.net and .za.org domains.

I'm not sure where you registered your email address but even as late as 1999 domains cost a few hundred dollars a year - just for registration. This was the time when Network Solutions was basically the sole domain registrar. The first $27.99 domain I registered was also my first, back in 2001. It was from Network Solutions.
Lately I've been using gkg.net, jp-domains, hostonce and goddady. Alwayswebhosting and Lunarpages are also great hosts.

Nowadays domains (.com) can be had for $8 or so per year and some registrars will throw in email for you for maybe $10 per year or so.

As to the iburst speed thing:

iBurst is now really dropping it. Speeds drop to 20KB/sec (on Tuesday I had 5KB/sec). A few days ago there have been authentication errors, yesterday (12pm) all towers in JHB were down. Tried to download some stuff yesterday, got 8 disconnects in 6 hours, playing online used to work, but is now unbearable.

Call-centre asks the same stupid questions (MTU settings, restart the PC/install latest fixes - duh I have a router). Now the have started blaming my setup (funny, the iBurst speedtest is 500-600kbps whereas a real-life speed-test is 100-120kbps) - don't know how my setup can show such different results.

/me patiently waiting for that ADSL installation

Yip it is as kuk as hell.

Waiting for a finalised detail on my DSL then I am rid of iBurpers. I already sold one of my UTD's and I have people waiting for my primary UTD also :)

You mean there are still suckers out there willing to part with their bank account details.

I still have my UTD on a shelf in it's original condition and packaging, so if there are any suckers in CT who insist in getting involved with that company they can have mine at a good price.;)
