As a longtime collector of audio material, I figured maybe forumites should focus on getting the audio from todays hearings in Sandton, rather than trying for 'video or nothing' - audio all by itself is also real good.

Trying just for video, and not focusing on audio, could mean we lose out on getting all that yummy audio of the various arguments, and more importantly, having it stored in easy to spread around 20 meg mp3's..

Capturing the hearings in mp3, means there's a damn good audio record which can be spread online, and stored for historical purposes. Also, its a LOT easier to do, requiring just a mike, powersupply, and recording device..

If there are any audio-geeks, who plan on going to the ICASA hearings, please consider taking audio recording equipment and setting stuff to record nonstop.

And for the video guys, if any - if the situation there doesnt provide a good method of capturing the VISUALS, then dont forget to focus on making sure you get the best audio soundtrack quality you can, because the soundtrack alone is valuable - even if the visuals obtained are fuzzy or lousy.

So locking off a cam on a tripod is fine, but make sure your audio is getting recorded from close to a speaker, assuming they're using a PA of some kind, is vital.
Long as the audio is perfect, it doesnt really matter about the visuals..

If anyone can record the hearings as MP3's I would be more than happy to host them on Hellkom.. bandwidth isnt a problem.. no WAV's tho hiehie :)

If its a 'public hearing' - its not their business to 'allow' or 'not allow' - and they cant argue that because its on private property that they can determine use of recording media - because its a government backed body and an open-to-the-public hearing.

If anyone/everyone who is going there, with recording media, runs into ANY problem, immediately make sure that you record and/or film the person who's telling you to stop filming/recording - and ask them exactly under what legislation precisely they are requesting this. Get it on tape. Request that they first identify themselves clearly, and ask them to tell you what what their official capacity is. (ie: do they even have any possible 'official' power to be asking or telling you anything at all)
Often 'government' related people will try and bullsh*t and scare you into following their orders, but if they have no legal right to do so - then you just shrug and stand there and smile at them.

And even if they do have some 'official' title, so what?

A title doesn't mean they have any backing in Law for what they are asking/telling/demanding you to do.

Dont be intimidated. Dont get angry. Stay cool, and ask them for precise justification in Law for what they are saying to you. Any attempt to touch you or the camera, is technically assault. Mention this in a friendly fashion, if someone gets huffy or threatening at you, and cant justify by citing legislation why you should stop filming/recording. Pretend you're a lawyer on Prozac during any confrontation, this freaks people out :)

Capture every little thing on audio or video, especially if they try and get Big Brother and try to control the recording or capturing of what's occuring.

In theory one could mount a microphone in front of every speaker. And Then have a floating mic. One would then need to coalate all these recordings into one mix.

I can gladly do this for you guys since I know how to do all the mixing. SOmeone must do all the recording and put them on a source that I can download. WAV would be better for micing and the final mix can be mp3'ed

well, Im currently not able to get out there to see whats going on. Im hoping that someone will have a recording in some form, which can be spread around as just audio and/or vid, so that we can all at least hear all sides on the issues, preferably in unedited form, regardless of how many hours of audio it is.
Bear in mind its probably gonna be fairly boring, but still, I'm sure there'll be some choice moments in it..
I guess we'll see by early evening, if anyone managed to record..
*holds thumbs*

PMSL - that's a classic for the MyADSL book of famous quotes :D

I don't know what has happened at the hearings yet - I have been playing catchup since yesterday afternoon with the posts in this the iBurst forum ;), but I cannot see that anyone from ICASA would object to having the public hearings filmed or recorded - they might even ask you for a copy of the video/audio tape so that the ICASA councillors can use it in their post-hearings deliberations :).

heh, as a thought, maybe ICASA themselves are recording the proceedings - could anyone going that side today, ask if they are. Maybe we can just pick up copies direct from the horses mouth, so to speak..
