ICASA commits to spectrum allocation plans

ahahaha... why not just do it and then announce that it is done?

ICASA can't commit to anything, except that they are totally and utterly useless.

I have more hope that my 86 year old Grandmother will come up with a workable allocation plan before then.
 
Erm, perhaps I am ignorent...but why are we still going on about wimax? Is this not a bit of a dud technology, specially with HSDPA+ and LTE coming and coming fast? As I understand it, you need to have a m@erse thing installed at your premisses etc and the speed is slow compared to other connection options out there. Am I wrong?

yes my furry friend, you may be a bit ignorant, no offence. Spectrum is what's offered here - you need it for WiMAX or LTE. And the WiMAX that our orange (both of them) and blue & green (both of them ) friends are punting isn't the beginning of what WiMAX can do, if they bothered to build to more base stations instead of hiring stretch limos, we could get blerry fast WiMAX (like 6 - 7 Megs at least - 'kay, fast by local standards).

Ok, point taken, but why invest in two different technologies when the other one seems so much more promising? HSDPA + already being deployed by Vodacom in its 21mbps format, and LTE gonna blow our socks off when it reaches 100mbps. Does Wimax offer the same kind of possibilities? If this is the case where 7mbps is the limit, then I can understand why networks seems a bit hesitant to deploy it. Not to mention the fact that the client is further inconvenienced by having to the equipment installed @ the premises.

But that asside, so if ICASA is ruling out Vodacom for this spectrum allocation, then how the hell do they expect Vodacom to deploy LTE?????

well, I don't know much about HSDPA+, but as far as I know, it can go as fast as 56 mbps, whereas WiMAX technology can technically provide up to 70 mbps (over short distances, ideal conditions, blah blah blah). How 7 to eventually 70, I leave to the more tech okes, that's as far as I go on that one. But as for LTE, yes, Nokia last year compared WiMAX to Betamax, and said LTE would be the VHS in this equation, but I think the jury is still out. But with spectrum allocated, we can finally find out what will happen in SA ...

Vodacom and spectrum/LTE? Yesss, this will be interesting to see how this plays.
 
LTE is a continuation of 3G

2500mhz till 2570 is the uplink for LTE

2620 till 2690 is the downlink

if icasa allocates the spectrum properly to new operators. we south africans could be the real beneficiaries to 2 good LTE networks. Newer mobile phones are currently being produced to handle LTE.

Let me know when they have assembled the committee in charge of assembling the committee.
 
These WiMAX vs LTE debates always degrade into tech spec comparisions, which is kinda missing the big picture. Far more important (esp in SA context) is the intended purpose for the technology/spectrum.

What will the mobile operators do with it? I suspect, perpetuate what the already provide but with more brash 'We have the fastest broadband' advertising. Remember LTE is a completely new radio network for which they are going to pay handsomely, and these costs need to passed onto the end user, probably as before in the form of limited bundled capacities, with high overusage charges.

Globally, traditional network operators have figured out (except Sprint/Clearwire/Intel diehards) WiMAX will never replace cellular technology in the way its used by mobile operators. Rather the opportunity is to use WiMAX's lower input costs to provide wireless services that mimic fixed wireline broadband offerings by maintaining a similar higher capacity/moderate speed/pricing ratios.

So the question is what would be better for the market; more mobile dialup (capacity constrained) services with higher burst speeds, or rather wireless fixed-line alternatives that align more closely with the modern understanding of what true broadband encompasses? Suppose it comes down to what your definition of broadband is.
