Numbering has no significance, each player just chooses a number.

In my opinion the numbering in cricket is actually useless, I suppose it's just a way of identifying players.

The number on the cap at test level is what number player they were to receive their first cap for their country as in if you have number 50 you were the 50th person ever to represent your country. Numbers on shirts in one dayers have no significance except to the person wearing them.
