Just a Idea I had, don't know if its doable via the ISP level but what if the ISP/s could have a account (similiar to the 1Gig, 3Gig etc accounts that you login in with a user name and password) for gamers. B4 you say use a un-shaped account I would just like to get 1 thing clear.
Un-shaped reduces latency yes but what if the ISP's can go 1 step further and force traffic through a specific route/tunnel that requires less hops and therefore reduces latency? From my understanding its not the shaped/unshaped that is the killer but rather the amount of hops it takes to get to a particular destination. Wouldnt it be great if the ISP's could write something or do something so it forces the traffic on a specific account to "proxy" to a prime destination instead of bouncing all over the place? (A list of all World of Warcraft server IP's can be given if needed)
Account could look something like this
Gamer(World of Warcraft) 1Gig Top-Up account
Unshaped
1Gig of Data
Uses best possible pre-determined route to France/California
So basically its a unshaped account with software that directs traffic to specific destinations via ISP level.
A better option would be to create a socks/tunnel program that also requires a user name and password provided via the ISP that when the traffic goes through this it is routed via the least amount of hops to its destination. Can be charged on a per 1 meg usage or "top ups". A extra way for the ISP to make some more money and attract more customers to its normal offerings.
As said this is all determined if the ISP's can route there traffic which im not sure of. I dont see why we can get 200ms pings to UK but get 500-1000 latency in WOW.
Just another suggestion is if the ISP's can mask packets to look like pings somehow cause even though we have unshaped we still know somewhere along the line something is getting shaped by the latencys.
