I'm doing some research for a niece going to study chemical engineering.

What would be the ideal hardware for an engineering student? I'm thinking netbook to carry around campus, take notes, record lectures, store text books and quick referencing and searches.

Then a cheaper desktop but with high-end CPU and memory to carry out modelling, CAD, maths programs, etc.

Any recent chem students know what software is specific to that course?

Matlab is standard across the engineering disciplines.
