Hey guys

I am looking for some good, solid ideas for things I can try to program to show and develop my programming skills. My one friend told me I should try and develop an application that separates the data-, server- and presentation layers and that makes use of some new technologies. Thing is, I want some more ideas. Maybe something that makes excessive use of data-structures?

I am looking at getting a job as a developer and I have been out of the game for a while. Any advice would be much appreciated.:)

Your friend told you what model to use(MVC), not an idea of what to make :P
Have you considered contributing to an existing OSS project?

Hey, yeah, he mentioned MVC. No, I actually didn't think of that... I'll go scratch around a bit and see what I can come up with. Thanks.

Try something small to start off with if you've been out of it for a while (and depending on what technologies you worked with before). The problem with trying to find ideas is that it's too general - identify a need and then problem solve to see what solution you would present. Just wanting to figure out MVC isn't really going to help all that much (though it's a great grounding).

Then, figure out how to create that solution - once you've got a framework idea, there are tons of places (MyBB included) that can help you to make it a reality.
