Does anyone know if there is a way off telling who is on MTN, Vodacom or Cell C as almost all the service provider these days offer free calls to there own numbers?

Still won't tell you which network they are on?

Well, then you know you are not using your "free on-net" minutes for the call (if you thought the person was on the same network) and really shouldn't matter except for that.

And if you call and the person is on the same network now and you thought he was on a different one, you just score that way.

there is a website... let me go through my bookmarks

Last time i checked ported numbers were under 3% of the total population of sim's. Thus the first 3 numbers should still give a really good gauge...

Not really... Still very hard to tell what network... :(

Both MTN and Vodacom share 071 numbers.

MTN has a new number starting with 060
8ta and cellc is now giving numbers starting with 061

Nope, not everybody has access to the prefix and then you get shared groups, especially in the 071 range not to mention the new 06 range.

Old thread, but found this site that works for SA number:
http://freecarrierlookup.com/

I am impressed. That actually works. Tested it with a 082 number that I know was ported to another carrier and it shows the correct carrier that the line is with now. Though it might just display the carrier that normally uses the number range.
