Ignition sticking on Polo Classic

So basically when I insert the key into the ignition, the key does not turn at all. It almost feels as if something is obstructing it from turning. I have to turn the key in a swift/quick manner for it to turn and start the engine. Anyone else experienced/experiencing same issue?

Steering lock?

Does it help wiggling the steering wheel a little bit?

Spray some wd40 or similar in the key hole and see if it makes any difference.

If the WD40/Q20 makes no difference then it most likely means one or more of the pins in your ignition is buggered; not making contact. You would need to get it repaired or replaced.

It's a common problem in older VAG cars.

I thought it was the steering lock initially but even if I turn the steering slightly it makes no difference.

Yes, steering lock is 100%

WD 40/Q20 and any other "liquid" lubricant is a bad idea generally. Ends up creating a sticky paste inside a lock which prevents the tiny springs from making sure tumblers and pins are where they are supposed to be with the key in or out. Better to use graphite powder for lubricating locks ...

The product I have is so old I do not know if it still packed in that form. A small yellow bottle of super fine graphite powder called " Just a Puff"
