Ignore it

a Colleague of mine lost it.
Their is things going on at work which is not always right and it worries him so much about nothing is happening about it, and now he thrown his toys out of the "kot".

My boss said he was trained to ignore things you can do nothing about.

1 example might be people appointed that cannot perform {bee}, and they just get praised.
or a job gets done substandard and the contractor gets his money.

My feeling is, I got children and wants to prepare a environment where they can also live. If I see something wrong I would like to fix it.

But like some municipalities which just seems to waste money and nothing happens, what should I or any normal person do about it.

Please advice,
drink relax pills or what?

If you want advice you'll need to spell out whether this is a government entity or a profit driven one. More generally though:

The BEE thing just blows & there isn't much you can do about it. e.g. I recently interacted with 2 people where I couldn't help but think that you'd need to add a zero to the salary of the guy with the wrong skin colour to even out the odds performance vs salary wise. No joke about that zero btw. Its just one of those situations where you just don't know what to say.

Your boss is 100% on the "ignore things you can do nothing about". Stressing does not improve the situation. BEE isn't going to go away. In theory its a solid plan (they really were disadvantaged)...but in practice the results are just disastrous.

Robert I'm glad you raised this type of topic objectively.

These last 3 weeks has had me looking at SA carefully without emotional bias. We can spout stuff on forums until kingdom come, nothing will change. I've come to the opinion that SA wont correct, nor will the ANC ever be voted out or removed from its position. White people will never ever be trusted again due to apartheid, and thus ANC will keep winning elections even though rural africans will suffer the most indefinitely.

The facts re corruption and mismanagement cannot be ignored. There's more to appreciate in life than the slow poison the ANC is applying to all South Africans, regardless of colour. So my advice is to immigrate.

Just like when you dip cattle you lead them into the dip and after swimming furiously for a bit they reach the other side and get out. The ANC has led this country into another dip and wont let anyone out. I think its irrational hope or naivety we cling to in thinking one day it will get better.

So, either accept living under the hegemony of the ANC and that associated with it or immigrate.

Your boss is right. You can't change it, so find a way to work with it. On the ANC being in power forever, that won't happen. It takes on average 30 years to vote out a liberation movement in Africa. We're on 19 now, I think the 30 year figure will be about right for us too.

Most "liberation" movements in Africa are all about the power and money. These movements end up with tyrannical governments more interested in keeping the status quo of an all powerful and very lucrative government position.

Such governments then result in rebel armies and civil war. Rinse and repeat.

Every indicator points to South Africa being no different.

It's a shame. All of this is powered by resources that do not require a stable society to generate wealth. The mineral wealth of Africa has been the biggest boon for the rest of the world and the most unfortunate yoke for Africa.

Not to say I blame the world for Africa's problems; that is just an unfortunate consequence of not having a prime directive.

On to the OP, change that which is in your power to change, find peace for what you cannot.

It sounds like you are a person with a personality that takes your moral centre seriously. In that case, I would suggest looking to immigrate to a first world country because this place will grate on you for the rest of your life and it will only get worse.

But know that moving to a first world country will not fix all your problems, it will only open up opportunities you could never get here. You will still be dealing with humans and thus you will be dealing with many, many wrongs no matter where you live and work.

Why then do I suggest immigration? In South Africa, every aspect of society is broken and wrong so there is no respite. Your subconscious is being constantly barraged and thus you will be hyper sensitive. Move to a country where there are aspects of society that make you feel happy and that will lower your sensitivity and allow you to ignore that which you cannot change.

+1

This is why I'm investigating my options of immigrating.

Things like this happen no matter where you work. Unless you want to confront the person and make a huge deal about it, its best to just take a chill pill. Sometimes you have to just brush off peoples' irrational behavior. Its the boss' job to sort employees out, and if he's not doing it then there's a problem. I can see why your colleague is freaking out, incompetency is the most annoying thing in the work place, especially if you and fellow colleagues have to pick up the work load and fix mistakes constantly.
