I'm confused about SA prices...

OK guys, WHY on earth is SA dealers so expensive when selling pc parts?
I just bought myself an 8800GTS (because Prophecy doesn't have 2900XT's for R4000 anymore), so I was a bit bored and was looking around on websites, came across www.wantitall.co.za .

Why are SA prices so sky-high when you can buy for instance the GeCube Radeon 2900XT for $399, import it to SA via Wantitall (quote here : http://www.wantitall.co.za/getquote.php ), and have it delivered to your doorstep for the same price that SA delers are selling it??

Surely the big importers should be buying from the factories and buying bulk and be able to sell it to us for cheaper than we can do it through Wantitall?
 
Because in South Africa the consumer is a cow and the companies are out to milk us dry. Products from A to Z are way overpriced. A Toyata that's build in SA sells for less in Australia than it does here.
Instead of companies competing head to head for your buck they all work together to keep prices high. Just ask MTN, Vodacom and CellC. Well the list is endless and I can continue on and on....

theirs car are so over priced its not actually funny anymore

i saw 1.4! sport for 159000 bucks yesterday for a freakin 1.4!

as far as i could tell the spoiler on the boot adds like 20k to the car

Jut curious, do your calculatios inclue import duty and VAT which sometimes aren't charged for a single import?

Only vat applies to computer parts duties were removed from computer parts a few years ago.

Your question should be directed at the Distributors who are the one's bringing in the components and then allowing dealers the right to "resell" them.

Companies like Rectron, Corex, Axiz, Comztek, Pinnacle and the list goes on are the one's who set the prices for the dealers who then have to mark them up to make a profit (which in most cases is not very much at all).

Stefan9, where did you ascertain that there were no duties applicable to pc components? As far as I was aware, there are duties still applicable (7% if I remember correctly).
 
Also how many 2900XT's does New Egg sell compared to say Prophecy ? Errrr ....

It's called buying power.

Just remember that if something goes wrong you won't have a warranty although you could probably buy two for the same price that they are charging locally.
 
SA seriously needs laws to prevent this.. of cause the usual suspects will threaten leaving etc

I remember Trevor manuel doing a way with it in one of his budget speech. I don't have a source for it but thats what I remember hearing him say.

Yeah,computer staff are so overpriced here, that's why I am gonna import components when I go to China next time around October. I will be a distributor, but will open to all MYADSL members!

I actually have to disagree. If you buy PC components in Dubai (harddrives, memory) the price difference last time I did this was like 10-15%. Of course this is way different from buying a R22.000 Acer laptop in SG for $2.000 (R14.000) or buying R980 worth of Givenchy perfume for 50% of the price
in an 'expensive' mall in the States. Heck I just imported a Littmann Master Cardiology Stethoscope (best non electronic stethoscope available) which cost me justr under R1600 with insured express shipping and VAT while locally it retails for R4000+. Heck just going to Macy's I was able to buy brand name Calvin Klein (and other) clothing items for 50% of what I would have paid for them here or
brand name clothes at PEP prices. On top of that Macy's give you 11% off
everything (even discounted clearance stuff) if you have a foreign passport or reside abroad.

Yeah, this has been the old excuse - "...costs more here due to supply chain and product support/maintenance costs.".

I say bollocks. Take Canon SA for example. They charge on average 35% more than if you import photographic equipment yourself, yet their service levels are appalling - they actually outsource their support to the most unprofessional backdoor operation called CameraTek.

From experience I point blank refuse to take my DSLR's/lenses there for repair/service. Whats the added value there? Nada!
 
All electronic componants are exempt from custom duties. Look it up - http://rapidttp.com/tariff/

VAT applies to all imports unless 'Gift' is specified on the import and you are only allowed 3 per year - they track this by your name.

PC components are over prices...but damn - Camera stuff is a complete rip-off in SA. Import it and save huge.

Grey/Parrallel imports do not have warranties honoured in SA. If your video card breaks it will cost you R400 to send it back to the USA for RMA. That's the going rate for 0.5kg through FedEx. I find that its worth the risk importing. If anything is broken when it arrives in SA it is always the manufacturers fault and not because of transit. Thus well manufactured items are normally perfect.
