Last evening it started with a slight scratchiness in my throat. Just before bed I had a blocked nose.

This morning it's a terrible runny nose. With all of the above.

Any advice before it becomes worse?

I had the same thing 4 weeks ago. Was bad for about a week and then I had I still had a blocked nose and phlegm for another two weeks. I just let nature run it's course.

I got it early as it seems many people are getting it now.

Nothing much you can do really, but I can only suggest something for the future.

I use these vitamin pills from Solgar. It's called Formula VM-2000 or just V2000. Cost's about R180 for 60 tablets. Last's for two months.

I have basically not been sick for the last 2 years since taking it while everyone around me suffers with colds and flu. I might get a runny nose for a day but that's it.

Give it a go maybe. I just took it because someone said it was great and thought what the hell try it, and for me it has made a real difference.

Can’t help you. I haven’t been sick for 20 years. Fifteen years ago I think I had a cold. My nose ran and I felt crap. BUT let me tell you about this really interesting bowel movement I had this morning...

the general GP line of attack goes like this:

1. let your body fight the actual virus: balanced diet & rest. (megadosing of slow-release vitamin c has shown partial efficacy on duration of the infection).
2. treat the symptoms through anti-inflammatories, analgesics, antipyretics and antihistamines (pseudoephedrine / corticosteroids / paracetemol / ibuprofen / loratadine). compare the concentrations of these ingredients in OTC products.
3. treatment with antibiotics if the infection is severe / widespread / has resulted in a secondary infection (pneumonia / conjunctivitis / otitis)
4. prevent transmission by limiting contact with other people.

i't's arguable whether the flu vaccine or immunity-booster remedies offer much protection.
cold and flu germs are predominantly transmitted via surface contact rather than airborne means, so washing your hands frequently is a better line of defence.

if you're into herbal or homeopathic remedies, perhaps drink a glass of water while facing east and chant 'i am better'. it really works.

Next time when one starts feeling their throat getting itchy, start sleeping with elavated pillows at night, make sure your neck is as vertical as possible. This keeps the infection at the throat area and prevents one from waking up with the infection in the nose. When one lies down at night, the phlegm from the neck moves towards the nasal cavity. Thats why colds only get worse after a new day and not during the day. I do it everytime, it works everytime. It may be uncomfortable sleeping, but the plus side is that the nose will never get infected and thats half the problem gone. Identify the cold early off course :)

I used to get sick a lot over the last few years. I started taking Viral Guard. Never had a real flu since September last year. It works.

Lol, I find this very hard to believe seeing everything is linked and covered in mucosa.

lol ponder, well it works, but don't know too much about the physiology of it but hey :) unless im an alien and it only works on me ;)

Your best bet is to strengthen your immune system. The only way you can do that is by taking Vitamin C regularly or anything that will naturally cause your immune system to be pro-active. You should be taking Viral Guard on a daily basis. Prevention is better than cure ;) In any case, if you do get the flu, just increase your dose of Viral Guard to 3 times a day and take 500mg vitamin c pills 3 times a day as well.

Don’t go moggie on the Vitamin C. You pee most of it out – the body can handle only so much (it doesn’t store it). An apple every 3 months or so will give you your Vitamin C requirements.
