Hey guys, just looking for some advice here.

I have a 4mbit line, but it's only syncing at random values around 1mbit. (e.g. 1107,989, stuff like that). My speed tests concur with these speeds.

I've called telkom a few times:

  • The first time the resetted my line on their side, I told them it didn't work. They said they would send someone, but help never came.
  • The second time was a repeat of the first time.
  • The third time a guy actually came, he asked whats wrong. I told him my router isn't syncing at the correct speeds. He tested the line with his router, and said it's not connecting, so I told him he forgot to plug the line into the router. He said it worked, I repeated my problem. He said he's off to test some stuff, and he never came back.
  • Fourth time another guy came. He was a bit smarter. He did some tests around the house and called me to ask if it's still slow etc. Later he climbed up the telephone pole at my friend's house (he lives close to me). He came back with no success, and told me he would send someone else. My friend then called me and said a guy from Telkom climbed up his telephone pole and now his internet isn't working anymore. The following day they said my line fault was handled successfully via sms. Yeah, handled? Broke someone elses net and fixed nothing.

A week later now, my line is syncing at 700k, but the connection keeps dropping and it feels slower than 56k. I had a 0.0072 kbps download on HTTP last night. Some pages don't even load.

My router is a fairly new Netgear, I doubt that it is causing the problem.

Do anyone have some advice? I am really fed up with Telkom cause they are completely useless. I'm paying so much for something that doesn't even perform at a quarter of the speed I'm paying for.

Thats Telkom for you.

At the moment I am getting latency issues and high amounts of packet loss. I definitly know its something up with my exchange, but in Telkom books all is ok :(
 
Yikes, i am not surprised your line is not syncing, you line stats are not good at all. You must be some distance from the exchange or your copper is shot to hell.
 
Yeah. You need at least 50dB or lower line attenuation for a stable line. 61dB is the highest line attenuation that I've seen in a while now. With 61dB you might still get a stable 384kbps.
 
Thanks guys, now I at least know where to start. I used to get 4xx kbps download speeds in the past, before all this happened, so I don't think it's my distance. Must be my physical connection then?
 
I am not sure if u will get a stable 384 line. mine is shot to hell. 3rd party advisers say that I am being shaped to helll. who can i scream at. apply for a line fault
 
Wow never seen attenuation that high before..... mines around 50db and I can only sync at 1mb, so I downgraded to 512.

Convincing Telkom to install a mini-DSLAM is the only way to really fix that.
 
My downstream attenuation is 63.5db, upstream is 22db and I sync at 2048 (once upon a time was a perfect 4mb). I'm just waiting to revert back to Fred Flintstone's grandfather's internet connection speed as T-scum will not do anything to sort this out.
 
60db+ is very bad attenuation, the chances you will get a stable connection at any speed is slim to none.

Since you say its a recent problem, chances are something has gotten damaged. It could be anywhere between your jack and the exchange, so keep putting pressure on Telkom and try investigate things your side as well. Sometimes its something as silly as the telephone cable from your router getting damaged.

Not to shoot down this theory because it is a possibility, however:

The last techie who came out to me tried this as his first "port o' call" of blame. He replaced the thing in 5 seconds, told me it was fixed and started packing up his stuff. I stopped him in his tracks, brought up my router stats on-screen, showed him the error of his ways and proceeded to explain step by step how he had in fact fixed nothing. He looked at these strange figures on the screen in front of him, scratched his head and looked at me blankly. Then he packed up his stuff and left.

I've basically given up. It's like trying to extract blood from a stone. One thing I do know is that although I'm fairly convinced the guy had no cooking clue what a downstream attenuation of 63.5 could possibly suggest, or for that matter a downstream SNR margin of 6.5, what he did know was that the little cable between the router and the jack was sure as hell not the problem. It was simply the easiest item to "fix" so that he could be on his merry way to go sleep under a tree in his van somewhere.
 
Phone and say your VOICE line has noise on it and you can hardly hear anything.

Tell them that it is intermittent and you suspect that there is a DRY JOINT somewhere on your line and that you want your PHYSICAL LINE traced and checked from your JACK back to the MDF.

Once they have typed in your fault, ask them to read it back to you. If it is not what you said (quoted from above) make them type it in, repeat and then ask for the fault ref number!!
 
I had the exact same issue. Line went crazy, syncing at random speeds and disconnecting like mad. Had a telkom guy come to my house. He said the copper was buggerd. Switched me to a different copper pair from my house to the box at the street and I was back at full 4meg speeds. Just phone them and to exactly as moggie said. Have them replace the copper if possible.

Thanks, moggie! I'm going to try this too. Just two things, when dealing with a voice line fault I take it i'm not calling the 0800 375 375 number, right? There is a different number for this IIRC? The other thing, what is a MDF? :o

Correct - dial 10212

They must trace your line from your jack to the :
DP - Distribution Point (normally the pole near your house)
SDC - Street Distribution Cabinet (the blue/green box on a corner near you)
MDF - Main Distribution Frame (this is the cable entry point into the exchange and is in the exchange itself)

When the techie arrives you tell him that your voice line gives you hassles every now and then but that your ADSL is K@K. It is carried on the same physical pair of cables so he has to check one to do the other anyway! If the fault is still there, then it can only be beyond the MDF, which means that either the jumper on the MDF is faulty (unlikely) or the DSLAM port is faulty (more likely).
