Hi all.

I have a ADSL, 10 meg Telkom line. Using a TP-Link TD-W8970 modem.
At times my internet goes down (Windows diagnostics say - DNS server not found) and after a few minutes (from 1 to 10 minutes) it is back up. The fault occurs erratically and some days no problem at all.
If I reboot (off for a few minutes) the modem it doesn't seem to help. I have tried setting DNS servers to Google.. no luck.
The line indicator on the modem always shows as syncing fine and Telkom tests say the same and line is 100%.

We (Telkom dude and I) have connected a Netgear N300 modem to test and I have not had an disconnects for a full day now.

Any ideas of what the issue can be?

So the line doesn't actually drop, and swapping the router with another potentially resolves the issue?

I had a similar issue and since then I now always have a permanent ping running in the background to google (ping www.google.com /t) so that I can quickly see if there is an issue on the line. My problem was caused by a faulty port on the exchange. I could however see my model losing line sync. Telkom tech swapped ports, problem solved.

From this statement I would say you need a new ADSL router...probably. Run it for a couple of days to confirm.

Well here are my suggestions. You can try the following:

1. Keep running the other modem for a couple of days and see if the problem persists. If the problem goes away it is your modem.
2. Sign up for a test account with another ISP. You generally get 1GB of data and a month free access. If the problem goes away it is Telkom ISP and not the actual connection.
3. Ask the Telkom tech to swap your line to a different port on the exchange. Check to see if problem persists.
4. Check your line snr and attenuation and consider dropping the speed at which your line syncs. This has helped me in the past.

Happy hunting

When you have a DNS problem and while you having it, you should be able to clearly see if sync is lost or not, I however doubt you loose sync having a DNS problem.

Sounds like the router’s cache is corrupting.

Memory probably dying.

Trying a different DNS Server as a process of elimination would help but also reading the logs of the router.

Another possibility: try a different power supply with the original modem.

I once had a Pace modem that was acting up. The power supply was providing ALMOST enough juice. A spare power unit from an old external hdd solved the problem.
